"It's so pretty." The young dragon reached for the beaker, but before he could grasp it, he was shoved out of the way by the irritated Skydancer he hadn't heard enter the room.

"The substance may be pretty, young chap, but it is also highly corrosive. Do not handle it without the appropriate safety gear." She considered her position for a moment, then clanged one of her gauntlet-encased hands down on the stool in front of his face. "Actually, I recommend you do not handle it at all, and that you get out of my study."

She watched him scamper away for a moment before returning her attention to the experiment she was setting up. With the particular brew she had brought back from the market, she should finally be ready to perform the procedure which would eventually reveal the original location of the piece of evidence that had come into her possession.

It wouldn't be long now. The fiend shall be mine by nightfall, she resolved.

(Update November 2014: GloamingAria earned the award for the Science Theme in the Masquerade Contest, and then took up chemistry as a hobby. She longed to join her clan’s deity, though, and looked for a worthy successor to keep her clan balanced between science and magic.

Happily, she found her successor in her own daughter, who watched her experiments with avid interest until she, herself, had grown, and took up alchemical and scientific duties for her clan. GloamingAriaII will never forget her mother, who introduced her to Science and encouraged her, and so she dons the costume which started it all in her mother’s honor.)
