"You’re the light I follow"

There is a story that surfaces among the hatchlings of Shadow. No one knows why or where this story comes from.
The hatchlings start talking about it at random times, asking the dragons of their clans if they know the story and all they can do is nod for they also remember hearing the story from shadows as hatchlings.
The story begins long before the time that they walked Sornieth.

It takes place among the time the gods began their creations.
Each deity had wanted to create a life in their image to prove their power. From cold ice crawled the Gaolers, from seering lava rose the Banescales. Plague brought about Aberrations, and from shadow slithered the Veilspun.

The Veilspun were quiet dragons, keeping to the home their mother had claimed, hiding in the shadows and watching the world outside the woods with glowing eyes.
No dragon dared enter the darkness, for at the time of their creation there was nothing to illuminate the woods as there was now.

Not even the glowing mushrooms that are so common now existed then.
The forest was cold and dark, few daring to even venture to the edges of the woods. The sounds of wind whistled through cold trees and swirling shadows and yet one day a dragon appeared at the edge.
This dragon was curious, led by their own questions to the edge of the forest. For even the Tidelords domain was less mysterious than the woods that bordered it.

The first steps into the woods were cold, but light still showed the way, lighting the roots that snaked along the ground but the further the dragon went, the more dark it became until they couldn't even see their claws in front of them.

Fear was an instinctual reaction and they were led by instinct.

The sounds of twigs snapping and whimpers carried through the silence as the dragon fought to find a way out, running in desperation into trees and bushes.
Eyes appeared from within the dark, shimmering in all shades of colour as they watched with amusement, their eyes adapted to the darkness.

Yet when the dragon finally was on the verge of giving up there was a light that shone from ahead.
It was a warm light, glowing softly through the shadows as it moved. The dragon picked itself off the ground and moved to follow it, carefully avoiding twigs as it moved forward to examine the source of the light.

In front of it sat a Veilspun, its eyes narrowed as it tracked the dragon's movements.
Its body was as dark as the night sky, with stars that swirled across it in constellations. Hair flowed to the ground, clear of twigs and dirt and when the dragon finally moved its gaze from the swirling stars it saw the light coming from the branches that grew from the dragon.
Delicate flowers grew on two slender branches that sat on top of the dragon's head. The petals glowed with faint light, illuminated the surroundings in gentle warmth.

While it was known that all deities had created dragons in their image, no Veilspun had ever truly left the woods, leaving others to speculate how they really looked.
Some imagined dragons that flew through the trees with agility and speed, hunting any dragons that ventured to close while others imagined vile creatures that dripped acid and crawled along the ground.
The small Veilspun that sat in the clearing was not something that any dragon had imagined.
The dragon stared, unable to blink or tear its gaze away from the sight in front of it, missing the hostile gaze growing in the Veilspun’s eyes.

It had trespassed on land it was not meant to be on, and it was overstaying its welcome.

With a low growl, the Veilspun leapt, slashing across the dragon's face before disappearing as quickly as it had appeared.
The dragon howled, gripping its face with one talon while whipping its head around wildly, trying to find where the Veilspun had gone.

Yet all that was left was a single petal, softly glowing on the ground in front of it.
The dragon knew that this was its only warning and they picked up the petal, holding it in their talons as they raced in a random direction, the glow illuminating enough for them to avoid roots and trees.
The forest would end one way or another, and they would be found one way or another.

It was so bright.

The darkness that had once covered her home was gone, like the goo that dripped from her scales as she forced her body through the portal, revealing the stars that shimmered within.

This forest was her home, that much she knew. The mists welcomed her in their cold embrace as she hissed in anger and confusion.

Light shone down from above, illuminating the clearing in a pale shimmer, the symbols on the rocks around her glowing faintly. Roots reached towards the portal, craving the life beyond the borders of their world where they had hidden away the Veilspuns so long ago.

The sounds of life echoed harshly against her ears and she dug her talons into the ground, hearing the rock shatter as she dragged the rest of her body into the world she once knew.
Sounds of dragon chatter and wingbeats echoed back to her and she narrowed her eyes, focused on the strange new flora that had sprouted amongst the trees, its soft blue light showing paths and hidden tunnels.

What had happened in the time she had slept? Where was the home she knew?

A presence on the edge of her awareness made her turn, her attention focusing on the eyes that watched her from the bushes. Familiarity.

Shaking the last of the portal off her scales she headed for the eyes, watching them disappear into darkness once more.
