Biography

The Velveteen Hatching Once upon a time there was a lonely Snapper who longed to be a mother to a hatchling of her own. She lived in the great, vast Shattered Plains on her own with no clan nor mate to speak of for they had parted ways some time ago. On the long sleepless nights she would often think about her loneliness and would hold back tears.

"O' Shaker of the Lands, what I would do to be not so alone. A little one to care for and love would rid me of all my sorrows!"

Every night she would say this as she stared up at the moons and the stars. One night, when the tears could not be held back, she heard finally the voice of Earthshaker speak to her.

"My Child," He spoke. "I hear your cries. Your tears now shed prove to me that this is your truth. I will tell you now the secrets to Life so that you may dispel your lonely affliction."

The Snapper was beside herself with joy. To have Earthshaker answer her! And not just that, but to share with her such amazing information! She listened fervently and carefully as His deep voice instructed her on what she must do.

His instructions struck her as odd; She did not argue. This was already so much more than she had ever expected. So she did as told.

The Snapper gathered meters of cloth and yarn, marbles, leather, and the softest of feather-down for stuffing. When she had all that she needed she set to work. The yarn for a soft mane to pet and comb, the leather for sturdy wings and supple paws, the cloth for a velvety coat, and the marbles for big bright eyes to see the world with.

When she was done, The Snapper was most pleased with her craftsmanship. The little beast she had made looked quite lovable! She decided that she would like a daughter and chose a name for her immediately: Amadea, beloved one.

"I have made her, O' Father of Fathers!" She cried as she held her creation aloft. "How shall I bring her to be mine? What secret words shall I speak to make her move and jump and play and live?"

The Earthshaker did not answer for some time, which disheartened her. The Snapper did not despair. Surely her god would tell her in time. As she waited, she tended to her Velveteen Hatchling. Despite the fact she did not move nor jump nor play, she was still her beloved one. Her Amadea.

One night, as she tucked Amadea into her side to shield her from the elements, The Snapper heard the voice of Earthshaker.

"You do well, My Child. The ways of Life are not so simple. You must care for your creation with all your heart, and love it as equally. There may come a day that your love will be tested. You must persevere. Let not your love falter, and life will follow short."

The Snapper was confused about her gods words. She looked down to her still Hatchling and frowned. She did love Amadea, yes, but what of her Life? When would she see her beloved child run and jump and play? As she settled in for a long sleepless night, she dreamed of Amadea's laughter and voice.

Many seasons came and went for The Snapper and her Velveteen Hatchling. She was dutiful in taking care of her unconventional child. She would play at feeding her, and wash her carefully so she did not dirty, and would take her for trips to far off places. She would talk to her about many things, and brush her mane, and give her a loving kiss each night as she lay down for her dreaming times. During her dreaming times she would think of all the things that they could do together when her child was well and truly alive.

But the seasons were unkind.

The Snapper grew to despair that she may never see her child alive. That she may never hear a small voice call her 'Mama' and may never hear 'I love you too'. She was growing old. With her age came many doubts.

Nevertheless, each night The Lonely Snapper would tuck Amadea against her side to protect her from the elements and tell her that she loved her- for she did. More than anything in the world. Even if she did not know for certain that the Velveteen Hatchling knew what love was.

More years passed.

The Snapper was very old now. She looked upon Amadea one day and felt tears well in her eyes. Whatever was she to do? She could feel herself dying, even if it was slowly. Yet still her Amadea did not move and jump and play and live. Why had Earthshaker never told her how to make her live?

"Oh, my baby," She weeped softly. "I have loved you so long, since before I even made you! I want only to know you love me in return. Why, why do you not live? O' God, why don't you live?!"

And she cried, and cried, until she grew very weak. And she cried even still as she lie down next to her Velveteen Hatchling. She did not move for some time as she cried more. When finally her tears would not, could not come any more, she sighed deeply.

"I am old and weak. I have nothing but you in my life, my baby. I wish that I could have seen you smile at me. I love you, my Amadea."

The Snapper laid still for a long minute before she felt something nuzzle her face.

"I love you too, Mama! I love you, I love you!" The Snapper's eyes went wide open as she looked her child in the eyes for the first time. Amadea was grinning at her with sparkling eyes.

"Oh, oh! My baby! My Amadea! You're real, you're alive!" She picked the Hatchling up and tossed her into the air before catching her. The little Hatchling laughed cheerfully and pawed at her playfully. Earthshaker's voice rumbled through the air around them then, as mother and child rejoiced.

"You have done it, My Child. You have found the secrets of Creation. To love something beyond love, even when you gain nothing. That is what makes things real, what gives them life. Congratulations."

And Mother and Child lived together happily, for ever after.
