This is the tale of the Barghest, Charlatan

Hor-divider-640.png
The Night Circus always appears at dusk. It unfurls amidst the dusty air, its tents spreading open like the wings of a great beast and its lights glittering like a thousand shining eyes. Among mortals, the Night Circus is a place of fairytale and most brush it off as a mirage. A simple trick of the last vestiges of light.

Indeed, the Night Circus was never meant for mortals. It beckons instead to those who have already passed from life - a lure for those lost spirits who perished amidst the endless desert sands. It pulls them into its embrace - striped canvas parting to reveal its dark interior. It feeds upon these spirits, but on occasion a living mortal staggers in through the tents as well. The circus welcomes them all the same, for most of the living are not long for the world. Soon they pass and the circus devours them too.

It is from the remains of such travelers that new life emerges. They are creatures crafted from the same dark magic that dwells within the tents, its tendrils reaching out and wrapping around the remains. . . yet the magic pulls other things in as well. The first of such creatures were not born beneath the full moon’s light, but they still inherited the curses of other beings that the circus swallowed. They were among the few things that emerged from the dark maw of the great tent, their forms concealed within a tangle of performer’s clothing and scraps of the same canvas material that comprises the circus itself.

Like their mother, the beasts of the circus lure their prey with promises of spectacle and wonder. Perhaps a quiet voice beckons in the night or the soft chime of bells rings out from the darkness. “Come one, come all!” The circus’ children whisper.

The entry is written in faded ink, a date scrawled at the top of the page next to a short title that reads “A Dance with Beasts”. It is the account of one Sasha LaRose, regarding a trip with two friends to the circus.

I always loved circuses as a child. Perhaps that’s not a popular opinion as most of my friends admitted that circus theatrics unsettled them. Honestly, I was the one who convinced them to go when we stumbled across the circus tents on New Years Eve. Told them it would be fun. I mean, it was fun. . . at least, at first.

It was called the Night Circus, a colossal striped tent that stood in the middle of a clearing within the Tangled Woods. There was a long line from the entrance, although I couldn’t help but notice that all of the other guests were wearing masks as they filed into the dark maw of tent. There was a pale drake standing at the door, collecting tickets. He paused when we approached, a smile barely visible beneath his porcelain mask.

“No tickets then?” He questioned, his voice whimsical and theatric. “No, no, don’t worry yourselves about it! We’ll call it even for tonight - a performance on the house!”

He ushered us inside and I excitedly followed the crowd into that main room where the lights blared and the stage was clearly set for a grand show.

I saw so many strange things that night. Contortions I never thought physically possible and fire acts that blazed over the audience. Yet, the strangest of all were the beasts. I expected beasts, of course. What circus would be complete without them? What I didn’t expect were the bizarre creatures that flowed into the ring. I don’t think I’ve seen anything quite like them before.

If I had to describe them, they were like colossal dogs with long, flowing fur dyed in a myriad of bright colors. They looked as if they had been scrapped together from pieces of the circus itself as they raced into the ring to dance and leap at the command of a strange Skydancer.

Perhaps I wouldn’t have thought much of those beasts, except that the Skydancer shouted out to the crowd. . . a call for volunteers from the audience.

I raised my hand, but it was my two friends who were ultimately called onto the stage. In that final act, I watched with a strange delight that slowly shifted to horror. I don’t know what happened to my two friends as they danced with those strange beasts on the stage, but I can tell you that they were not the same people when they returned to their seats.

It was as if something had been stripped from them and they had been replaced with different people entirely. As if they were mere puppets animated by unseen strings. You know, they both disappeared the next day. I remember leaving the circus with them. . . and then no memories of them after. I can't help but imagine that they've been pulled back into that circus and back to those strange beasts who hypnotized them. Whatever the case, I hope they are ok.

Sasha LaRose did indeed have two friends by the names of Maxwell Black and Daniel Hampton who supposedly went missing shortly after New Years and have not been seen since. Among Maxwell’s abandoned belongings, a black ticket stub engraved with golden lettering was retrieved.
