Ewma found the Laospí through the pearlcatcher duo Bara and Didi. On one of their routine visits to her parents' clan, Ewma was 'gifted' to the Laospí as both an opportunity to mature abroad and as an attempt to save her from a young consignment. Her parents had a long history of having excellent children, excellent enough for the Earthshaker himself to recruit them to his Exalted legions. Ewma would have gone the same way had Didi not impulsively agreed to take her. Ewma grew into a lovely young pearly in the time it took for Bara and Didi to return to their home.

In the Laospí, Ewma's aloof demeanor and diligent priorities left her with few friends and little interest in finding more. She was assigned to be Alia's apprentice as a scribe thanks to her talent for fine calligraphy. It was a difficult position; few could have done it as well as Ewma due to Alia's jealous hoarding of her privilege to commit the clan's actions to history. After settling in by doing menial busywork like organizing, filing, and maintenance, Ewma finally found her niche when she started doodling on a spare piece of parchment while Alia scribbled events down and complained about her aching knuckles. When the banescale saw the doodle, she immediately asked if Ewma could do that again, and assigned her the clan's book designer, calligrapher, and illuminator. While Alia coveted the act of transcribing, the act of making that transcription beautiful eluded her large digits. Ewma agreed, seeing it as a happy compromise for the time, and when Alia isn't around she keeps notes of which Laospí members leave with a dry wit in a small pocketbook she bound herself.
