it's just you and i, ain't it? under the stars.
Ocotillo can't remember anything before the orphanage. It was crowded and noisy, and hunger was never far behind. Whispers followed them whenever they ventured beyond the orphanage's walls; whispers of gangs, parents killed in shootouts, and that poor child.

This town didn't care about them. And they didn't care about this town.

So they ran. Past the playa, into the hills beyond—far enough that nobody would bother searching. Out in the desert, nobody cares how proper you're being, or how dirty you are, or how well you can read. All that matters is your mettle.

Mettle—that's a word Gualicho taught them. They stumbled upon him by accident—an encounter with wild beasts gone wrong, and he rescued them. Granted, he immediately tried to abandon them, but they knew as soon as they saw him that he was the sort they wanted to be when they grew up; strong, resourceful, and totally awesome. Gualicho's grumpy, but they know it's just a hard shell. Nothing'll stand between the two of them and the world.
