Torran was, once upon a time, a pearlcatcher, as proud and arrogant as any members of his breed. He took great joy in the polishing of his beloved pearl and spent much of his time practicing his songs and words of wisdom and power.

A sudden, devastating loss dragged Torran away from his vanity, forcing him to recognize that beauty is not the center of the world. His love was, and she was gone. He grieved strongly for months, torn between weeping and ranting, hating the gods and begging them to bring her back. He had never had children with her, and with her loss he felt as if she had never been at all.

He fled his home briefly, finding the pitying looks of his clanmates more damning than any other insult yet. He begged the gods to bring back his love, but silence was all that came. When they would not grant him his wish he instead begged them for the heart of a wildclaw, begged them to take him away from the vanity that had cost him so much.

Instead of granting him the heart of a wildclaw, they instead granted him the form of one. At first Torran are irate, believing himself tricked, unable to make himself give up his pearl, the one thing that still reminded him of his past. As time went on, though, he began to understand why the gods did as they did, and he respected it. He embraced it.

Instead of hating the gods as he once did suddenly Torran found himself weeping in joy, in love, dedicating his life to the whims of the gods above. He returned to his Clan, though few recognized the vain pearlcatcher in the handsome and prim wildclaw. Others saw his love of the gods and came to him for advice, for wisdom, for help. He gave them all they asked for and more.
