Murphy
Horticulturalist
Food production specialist and plant nerd

"But do you know how it propagates? It's very exciting."

Murphy's got a knack for growing things. You wouldn't know it by looking at him, but this kid's passion in life is hybridizing flowers and improving crop yields. You can bet that if it grows, he knows what it is and how it thrives, and if he doesn't know it he will soon.

He's pretty quiet, all things considered. This makes it so that others don't really get the 'real' him, but it's an even trade for a little privacy in what is sometimes a crowded lair.

The real him? Well, it's a difficult thing to pin down. He knows it, but he feels like very few people take the time to get to know him well enough to judge it.

Murphy likes poetry and art that makes people think about their own mortality. He prefers stories that end logically, not necessarily in the way that makes you feel good. He has a patient demeanor and a steady hand, and he can often see where things may go awry later if not dealt with soon. He's neither cutting nor cruel. His laid-back and welcoming personality often takes people by surprise. After all, aren't wild claws supposed to be ... well... wild?

Murphy's a bit lonely since his best friend,
Eponymous, chose to join the deities, but he's doing his best to adjust. He kind of misses her relentless chatter about the books she's been reading or the stories she's heard. He knows he'll make new friends, but it's just not quite the same without her.

In his spare time, Murphy does a lot of reading. He also dabbles in art, though he admits he's not very good at it (and he's right). He's very into mosaics right now, and the corridors near his quarters are full of lopsided renditions of the creation myths and the deities. He believes that for a happy life one should do things at which one excels and which make one happy - work and play in equal measures. And he makes sure to walk that path as much as possible.

Murphy's greatest moment so far was found in saving Bordeaux, one of the elders of Oakrest, from despair at the loss of his Charge. Bordeaux's charge was a mountain oak that had taken stubborn root on the Shattered Plain, and for a long time the clan lived on the the Plain, tending to the tree. But the harsh heat and the infrequent rains were too much for the plant, and after one final flowering and many years of struggling life, the tree died.

Bordeaux was devastated, and Murphy knew where his task lay. He had studied the oak for years. He'd even gone on excursions to find where other specimens usually took root. And with great care, he harvested some of the acorns from the precious tree, and he planted them, kept them in the right conditions, and waited.

For weeks, there was little progress. But Murphy knew plants like no one else in the clan. He knew how much patience had to be put into a little tree. And under his patient hands, the little seeds soon sprouted.

One was sickly from the start, and it died soon after Murphy began hardening the seedlings in the desert sun. Another was destroyed by the ravages of a ground squirrel looking for an easy meal. But the third, Murphy protected dutifully.

And when it was strong enough, and when Murphy was sure it would survive to maturity, he presented the young sapling to Bordeaux. He explained that the tree was a direct descendant of the Oakrest tree.

Bordeaux was so touched by the thoughtfulness and generosity of his clanmate, but there was little to offer him that could not be easily attained. Not there on the Plain, anyway.

But as Murphy explained that a mountain oak would do much better in the mountains, Bordeaux understood that to follow his Charge, they would have to move the whole clan up into the canyons around Greatwyrm's Breach. And when they did, the oak sapling was given a place of honor until it was strong enough to be planted directly in the earth. And Murphy was given an enormous chamber that let out onto a series of terraces, where he could cultivate as many plants as he wanted.

And there he stayed for many years, helping the dragons of Oakrest, until he was certain it was time for him to move on.
