Biography
Briar
b i o g r a p h y Title | Forest Guardian Personality Courageous, lovesick, curious, confident Briar is one of the only common dragons living within the forest with no magic to speak of. He is simply a resident who aides the spirits in keeping outsiders away from the forest. He has become a pet of sorts to some of the less powerful spirits who live in Weald and they protect him from afar even if they rarely interact with him. He is in danger often but is rarely aware of it, as he is committed to simply living a quiet life surrounded by nature. He is desperately in love with Pothos, who he spotted on a warm summer afternoon bathing in a forest pool. Though she does share his feelings she avoids him, as unions with his kind are not welcome within the forest. |

The forest was filled with dappled sunlight and the songs of birds filled the warm summer air as Briar stepped within its borders for the first time. He was young, brash, and unafraid of the creatures that supposedly dwelt within the woodland. What he sought in the forest was unclear but he defined it as a simpler purpose, the desire to live in the wild and untamed thickets of his homeland, away from civilization. He was searching for the exquisite peace that only comes in solitude, surrounded by an environment untouched by others. On that summer afternoon he traveled alone with only a cloak, bow, and knapsack and wandered with no direction. If he did not find some sort of sanctuary it was unlikely that he would ever see the world outside the forest again. As he walked, breathing in the fresh air and whistling, he never could have predicted what he would soon discover. The young dragon was drunk on the beauty of the trees, the warm spots of sunlight, and glimpses of wildlife in the undergrowth. He barely noticed the sinister presence lurking in the shadowy copses around him and moved forward with a steadfastness that was unusual for the locals, who would only dare step foot on the border of the forest.
He was being watched. The spirits that dwelled in Weald were not typically welcoming to outsiders. But as they observed him they soon found that he had no real purpose there. He did not disturb the animals or plants but treated them with respect as he approached the heart of the forest where the world tree had grown for centuries. The spirits could only lead him gently around the tree’s domain so that he might avoid the wrath of its keepers. When he at last found a place to rest they left him, returning to their own homes and freeing him from their influence. It was soon after this that he came upon a scene he would never forget. He left his cloak, knapsack, and bow at the base of an old tree to drink from a beautiful forest pool tucked away at the base of a knoll. But as he approached the water a low and enchanting voice reached him from the opposite bank, carried by a mischievous breeze. A nymph bathed in the clear cool waters of the pond, singing a mournful song that struck his heart in an instant. Her beauty was overwhelming and as he gazed at her he could not deny that she was the only being that he would ever love.
The graceful curve of her slender neck, the elegance of her folded wings, and the deep emerald color of her scales filled his mind and were ingrained there, erasing the existence of anything else. He was rooted to the spot, unable to call out to her, but was filled with the inescapable desire to pledge himself to her. She could not be mortal. She was too precious, too alluring to be anything but a spirit. And yet he loved her instantly. He watched her for several moments before turning away, ashamed that he might be looking at her against her wishes. It was painful to look elsewhere even for a moment, but averting his eyes helped to break the spell for a moment. He took a sharp breath and her singing halted. She became aware of his presence and her eyes found him on the other side of the pool. Though fear flooded through her it was overwhelmed by an intense curiosity. She dipped beneath the surface, gazing up at him through the rippling water. His expression was interesting, a combination of adoration and embarrassment. The nymph could not help but be intrigued. She approached, her delicate head lifting from the water as she drew close. Briar gasped as he heard her draw near but did not dare to look at her. His heartbeat was so loud she could hear it in the still air.
“Mortal,” she whispered in a low voice, “why have you come here?”
Briar swallowed hard, so captivated by her voice that he had difficulty finding his own.
“I o-only came to drink,” he stuttered. “I did not mean to look upon you. My s-sincere apologies.”
The nymph laughed and the sound almost brought Briar to his knees. It was the most pleasant sound he had ever heard.
“You need not apologize,” she replied. “I can sense your intentions were innocent. What is your name?”
“B-Briar,” he said quickly, sneaking a glance at her as she emerged completely from the pool.
“I am Pothos. I should warn you to be wary of the forest spirits, Briar. Not all are as merciful as I am.”
“I thank you f-for your advice. It has been my honor to receive your mercy.”
Pothos looked at him closely. He was handsome enough, strong and courageous, untainted by the greed of his kin. She felt an unexplained fondness for him. But she knew she must leave him as soon as possible to avoid the ire of her clan. If they saw her tolerate his presence in the forest she might become a target of ridicule or even punishment. Only the Elvenking could permit his existence in the forest.
“I hope we will meet again,” she said softly.
Briar bowed his head with his eyes closed and when he opened them again she was gone. Unbeknownst to him she would seek council with the Elvenking to discuss his arrival in the forest and give her consent for him to remain in her territory. To him he had experienced something that would change his life forever but did not understand the gravity of their meeting. He would live under her protection from that day onward, awaiting the day that they would be together once more.
