Grotesque-L.pngDivider-Horizontal.pngGrotesque-R.png

His home did not want him. No one there did.

Alone, in a childhood place, that should have been a haven.

Ignored, as if invisible.

His once friends no longer knew him.

An outcast? Not quite.

A shadow, perhaps, or another nuisance plight?

Never aging, he watched his family grow.

So much older, so much taller.

While in the corner, he cowered low.

An invisible child among adults.

Did they not see him? Or was he simply null?

No longer useful, as an ever youth?

He stood on counters, yelled in their ears.

But they brushed him away like a fly to the hearing.

He stole their possessions, but they paid that no heed.

They always found them, while he begged and knelt to plead.

Was he not wanted? Was he not real?

Was he a living ghost, in a world grown up and unfeeling?

He escaped to the clifftops and turned his gaze to the skies.

Where he could watch the Complex with slowly hardening eyes.

People passed by, looking down on his world.

But they never stopped, they always flew by.

One day, a woman with a halo came down to the hillside.

A group of small childs - human, dragon - shifting at her side.

They ran past him, as he called out in vain.

Too intent, they were, or blind to him.

The woman stopped before him, however.

Her eyes slipped over him, then locked with his.

She frowned and looked away, then came back again.

Someone could see him? At least, just a little?

He stood taller, smiling shyly.

Please, he thought. Just this once.

The woman unclipped a necklace she had on, and reached down to him.

It was a string with a paperclip, that was it.

She slipped it over his head, and gently ruffled his hair.

Then carried on her way, with a look perplexed over her shoulder.

Someone had seen him! He was overjoyed.

But it was bittersweet.

He watched as she left, hoping she'd come back.

Hoping he could join the playful little party.

Everyday he watched the skies, seeing many a visitor arrive.

She came back often, the halo woman.

And every time her gaze lingered on him.

He waved, he called, but every time.

She left again.

And sorrow filled a void.

A month went by, the days repeating.

Was this his life now?

An eternal day?

He longed for friendship, he longed for more.

But no one saw him, or they ignore.

He had about lost hope, or even the will to live.

When a gentle hand touched his shoulder.

And he was lifted from his no longer home.

She had come! She had come!

He hugged her as she flew.

The small dragons around her, chirping a hopeful tune.

Within a glowing tree did they make a home.

No one ignored him, no one walked by.

They saw him and spoke, and laughed at his jokes.

He was welcome, he was known.

He was finally at home.

Time flew by in the Yggdrasil tree.

He explored it, he found friends.

He became the local cryptid, if you will.

They asked him questions, they gave him tasks.

He was happy to do so, in his own time.

But then, she was gone.

Her and the childs.

He could find them nowhere, anywhere.

And people left his questions unanswered.

Where was she? Where were they?

He searched and searched, until workplaces were in disarray.

Out of frustration, he was told.

They had been cast out.

Cast out from the hub.

Cast out from the Complex.

Out into the void between multiverses.

He asked again and again.

Could he go with them?

But no, was the answer, he could not.

For days he was not seen, hiding in the vents.

Peering out into the void, but seen only that.

A void.

Why had this happened?

Why was it so?

Long buried sorrow arose.

He stole the paperclips from around the tree.

Leaving them in piles, and taking some with him.

Annoyed, they were not.

Which was what he'd tried to do.

They liked what he did?

Why so?

Perplexed, he continued his paperclip rounds.

And found a kind of joy, watching from the corner.

As someone found the little string or metal.

Over time, he was happy again.

He became the paperclip cryptid.

He had a purpose, he was known.

But there was always that sorrow, deep in his bones.

He sometimes saw them, out in the void.

Only from a distance, but still.

He knew they were fine.

The paperclip he wore on the thinning cord string.

Was bent out of shape, and shiny from handling.

It reminded him of hope.

It reminded him of love.

And at least, he knew, he had both.

Both within here and the void.
