Biography

Merlau is a quiet and thoughtful dragon. He's never the first one to present his opinion. But when he does speak, his clan members listen and find that his words carry wisdom. He is a member of the Senior Council of Ember Clan, and is one of the most trusted advisors of Captain Auberje and Deputy Kerasos, in matters of diplomacy and inter-clan relations.

Origins

Lest anyone should suppose that I am a child of nobody, a foundling sold to auction for meager coin, I may say that I am noble born, and of ancient line, for all the good it did me.

The day of my hatching was cause for much celebration in my clan. My clutch was robust and strong in number. If one among us was weaker than the rest, it was not yet cause for worry. It was believed that I could yet grow strong and bring honour to our clan name.

However, as we grew, I fell behind my brothers and sisters in the games of cunning and trickery played amongst Shadow children. Deception and guile did not come naturally to me. Some clan members feared that I was slow of wit. In truth, I was quick to understand, yet seemed unable to lie.

Due to the connections of my family, I was given a chance to bring honour to myself, through a diplomatic position. I lacked not eagerness to work hard. However, in my innocence, my inability to deal in covertcy and cunning in the world of diplomacy led me to misstep and cost my family in honour and status. I resolved to leave my family and clan behind to seek out if I could learn how to lie.

I wandered across many lands, and witnessed sights I had never dreamed of in my sheltered youth. Without wealth or connections, I paid my way through what menial labour I could offer. Yet, although I was no longer wealthy in treasure, I gained a treasure trove of knowledge. In the thriving forests of the Viridian Labyrinth, I saw more manner of plant and animal life in one acre of land than I had conceived of existing in all the world. In the Sunbeam Ruins, I spoke to learned scholars and learned of the ancient history of dragonkind. In The Sea of a Thousand Currents, I met sages of a different kind - those who peered into the mysteries of all possible futures. I was thankful for their kindness, yet I will admit, I was glad to leave behind those uncanny mystics. The Ashfall Waste taught me how a weapon, like a warrior's heart, grows stronger after being tested by fire. crossed their waters, but I will admit I was glad to leave behind these uncanny and mysterious mystics. Through all these travels, the innocence of my youth gave way to worldly wisdom. I understood more about the shadows, as well as the light, that lingers in the hearts of dragons. Still, I had not learned how to lie.

Upon setting foot on the steppes of the Windswept Plateau, I heard the noise of hundreds of dragons laughing with joy and merriment. There was something in that sound which beckoned me to stay some time. With cautious optimism, I began to seek some means of employment during my stay.

One day, when I stopped by a stream to drink, I met a most impertinent dragon. Coming upon me unawares, he splashed water at me in invitation to play. I believed him to be mocking me, and tensed with anger. But the smile in his eyes was one of joy, and I was intrigued by his carefree and easy manner. Kerasos laughed and swam away from me farther into the river. I followed him, and I have been following him since.

It was Kerasos who showed me, that there was more worth in living the truth of my heart, than in learning to speak a lie. It was I will be travelling the world no longer.
