Biography
Anfang
Following a series of unfortunate misunderstandings, the artist Anfang leaves his clan feeling dour. He wanders aimlessly for some time, resting in caves and burrows as he searches for inspiration. At one such pit stop, he is awoken by a cheerful nocturne with a bag of rocks. A bit touched, possibly, for she talks about them as a farmer would speak of their vegetables. Nonetheless, it's the first kindness Anfang has received in some time, and he accepts the bag with a word of thanks.
He's not sure why he doesn't move on immediately, but he stays a while. He paints the sea below, he idly whittles figures from dead branches. And when his aimless artworks have just about dried up, he starts to pack up again. Picking up the rocks from the touched nocturne, he notices they're surprisingly light.
They're living stones, it turns out. Or they were living stones, but now their brittle husks have dried into strange colorful pebbles. There's a certain beauty to them, Anfang thinks. He begins to carve one, on a whim, and is shocked to find that the medium agrees with him. He carves each one into a small figure, dragons and bats, rabbits and gods. And when they pile is done, and his cave is cluttered with tiny statues, he finds that he still craves more.
He's able to sell them to a passing merchant easily, and brings the money to his strange neighbor. The price she asks for another sack of stones is even lower than he expected. He chats with her while she bags them, but as she talks happily about growing them as food, he can't bring himself to tell her that he would never eat one.
