in the thickest part of the tangled wood, at the heart of a knot in the east so entwined and thorned none have come within yards of him in decades, a warrior sleeps. once, a champion of the shadowbinder. leader of her armies, the exalted many who fight as a mass of encroaching darkness against her borders, enemies on all sides. he wielded a spear almost his length, tipped with a metal blessed by the shadow ichor of the umbral mistress, a thick ooze to infect even the smallest scratch. his head shrouded in an unsettling helm, spiked and imposing, a silhouette masking his features. a general on the front lines, a stranger in peace. in a battle against the lightweaver's forces a deadly blow was struck upon him. his most trusted captains fled, carrying him to the thorndark altar, to the dripping feet of their dark mother. there she cast him and his captains into the pool, and brought only one body back out. she carried him to the east, rose thorns around his body, bound the souls of his loyal soldiers to his resting place. still armed, still wearing his battle raiments, she encased him in deadly brambles. and he slept. the knowledge of him faded from fact into speculation, speculation into legend, legend into make believe. few remember wort, general of the shadowbinder, blessed with a divine javelin. those who recall have tried to seek him out, awaken him from his slumber, but even fewer have died against the thorns of his tomb. soon, though, very soon the sun eaters will wake him.
