Sabaton, the Sage-Bonded
[he/him]

Born into servitude, Sabaton was always angry at his lot in life. The secluded village that he scorned as his birthplace were strong believers in mysticism, and especially in the supernatural powers of divining. They devoted a great deal of effort into predicting the future, and every three generations, one such incredibly powerful Sage Diviner was born. As part of that, almost all of Sabaton's peers, born in the same three years as he was, were destined before they were even born to be the lifelong servants of the Sage - Sagaris.

Out of all the ten-or-so chosen child servants, Sabaton resented Sagaris and the entire village the most. He was only about three years old when Sagaris was born, and his entire early life revolved around them. Loathing their very existence, Sabaton therefore was never close to the young Sagaris and took every opportunity to slack off and disobey the rules - he never laid a hand on Sagaris, but likewise never moved to help them either. He took the according punishments willingly over and over again, and by the time he was approaching adulthood had the scars and bruises to prove it.

Despite this, Sabaton never abandoned Sagaris. When Sagaris was imprisoned for days in darkness as part of their training, every other servant would leave: every other but him. He heard them cry themselves hoarse, and chose to sneak himself inside and give the young Sagaris food, drink and a candle. He would do this every single time they trained in darkness for years and years, but always played dumb whenever Sagaris questioned him, reacting with derision. Even when he was caught and whipped, with Sagaris made to watch, he never stopped.

As a result, one month before Sagaris turned twenty-one, they came to him and only him and begged him to help them escape. They told Sabaton what their future entailed - a life enshrouded behind a mask, forbidden from leaving their house or speaking words that were not prophecy. They told Sabaton that such a life in chains was not worth living. Furthermore, they confided in Sabaton that they came to him because they didn't trust any other to not betray them - as much as Sabaton disliked them, they knew he hated their village more.

It took Sabaton about five minutes to decide to agree with Sagaris. He immediately set about planning their escape, working hard for the first time in his life. It took longer than expected, and combined with the ceremony of Sagaris' coming of age, it was only the day before they came of age that they could depart. They fled while Sagaris was to be secluded in their usual dark cave, and managed to make it to the foot of the mountain before they were stopped by the Sage's Guards. Sabaton took several arrows to his legs and couldn't continue, and bade Sagaris to leave him and flee on his own. Combined with the thought that they would go back to their village and Sabaton would die, this incident distressed Sagaris so much that they released an incredible amount of psychic force, knocking their pursuers to the ground and teleporting them to the middle of Argyra.

Sabaton would recover in Argyra, completely unused to the place but gladly acclimating. He lost one of his legs, but was given a wheelchair while he recovered. Sagaris visited him while he recovered, and at first he told them to piss off, but upon seeing their crestfallen face, relented and allowed them to hang around him.

Now, the two have an odd relationship that is a little like that of a dysfunctional pair of siblings.
