"Just think of how many lost and hungry hatchlings this treasure could feed! The danger is worth it."
╰━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╯

"Youth and arrogance make a potent concoction for recklessness, leaving nothing to the imagination that might wonder why he crept his way down here. Oh, to blow out a candle when it is burning brightest, to watch the light die in their eyes. It is a treat I get to enjoy so very sparingly. Lightning in a bottle, one might even say.
-The Collector

Emile is an outlier among the Glass Order, having nobility in name alone. In life, he was a Thief-King, ruling over a loosely networked clan of spies, thieves and assassins scattered throughout the lands. Emile rocketed through the ranks of their clan in record time, and when he took over as leader, he swiftly pivoted the outlaws to his just direction. He had lofty dreams of dismantling the very systems that drove so many of his comrades to the criminal underworld just to survive. Under his rule, they no longer tormented whatever dragons happened across their path, instead targeting the rich and privileged.

Although young, Emile proved to be a competent leader, with a charismatic flourish that drew his clan in. He needed every advantage he could get, for many of the clan grumbled at his noble vision of their dirty work. The younger thieves and even spies were easy to ply with his silver tongue, enchanted by his promise of ensuring that no hatchling need ever grow up hungry and scared like they did. Even those less convinced still followed his orders loyally, as long as the treasure continued to flow and bread remained on the table. It didn't matter to most of the clan who their hoard came from, only that it belonged to them.

The old guard of assassins, the worn veterans who had seen life for what it was, were not so easily swayed by the new Thief-King's grand ideas. Quite the contrary, the elite of his hitmen had vested interests in keeping their tangled web of contacts rich in gold. When one of them caught wind of a ruined castle in Cairnstone Rest, complete with rumors of danger beyond measure, a plan was quietly hatched in the shadows of the clan.

On the direction of his most senior assassin, Emile took a small party to investigate a castle supposedly brimming with riches. Side by side with his trusted assassin, they snuck into the castle as silently as a whisper, aided by their small size as Veilspun. While the rest of their comrades took more direct approaches, his assassin advised they attempt to move through the catacombs down below. Secretly, she intended to snuff out their leader and return with a tale of dismay at their unfortunate encounter with some unforeseeable danger.

She did not expect to stumble onto a crypt of glass cases. She certainly did not expect the agonizing hours that followed, nor her eventual demise to then be cast aside like a broken toy. Least of all did she expect to watch her leader's death with horror, her last thoughts filled with one final emotion: regret.
