Witchery isn't exactly new to Princess Seraverica's life. She's surrounded by magic users, her family is practically ruled by it, for all that they are royalty. A blessing-- or is it a curse? --upon her father's line dictates that he will have powerful children, for a price. If they are born outside of the solstices or equinoxes, they will weaken and die, burnt out like a match.

It affects many of her relatives, but it does have workarounds. In her case, marrying a fae prince did the job in protecting her children from the curse. The fae had their own caveat: any child born out of season is cast out of the fae realm. The children of those cast-offs could theoretically be welcomed back in, but they had to prove themselves, had to be willing to fit their home-court's mold. Most importantly, they also had to be born in the proper season.

It was a fitting sacrifice. Her husband may be cold and reclusive, but at least her children need not know fear from the curse she bears.
