Biography
I was born during the longest night, when darkness settles longest over the lands and only reluctantly yields to dawn. I remember the world I was born to was a silent one, devoid of sound, as it has ever been. But the moon and stars above were bright enough that I could see everything. Later, my mother would tell me that when I first cried out into that night, my voice called the weak wills around us into the next world. Only those who could not hear me lived through those midnight hours. I was born to death; my voice an impetus for the end, the last thing heard by those who can hear. Any weak enough to listen when I sing will not survive me. |
Dirge is, while definitely not the nicest person, not evil, despite his ability to sing people to death. This makes communication rather difficult, as seemingly as a result of his power, he is deaf. While lipreading has become a viable and sometimes necessary option, he prefers those he interacts with on a regular basis be able to sign with him. This has resulted in seeming as a withdrawn, slightly aloof being who rarely leaves the confines of the clan grounds. He spends most of his time alone in the upper reaches of the canopy, and oftentimes flying high above it, studying the unique star systems of the pocket realm. Those few with the ability to survive his voice can sometimes be found in his company. Astaroth in particular is entirely immune to his ability - perhaps because of the similarity between them -and receives frequent visits when she crosses into the realm. However, most others avoid him despite that he is relatively safe to be around just as a matter of avoiding the risk, though he finds he doesn't particularly mind the solitude. Being alone gives him more time to follow his own pursuits and research. And when no one is around, he can sing to himself. Even if he cannot hear it, the act is somehow calming, and he is told that it sounds rather lovely when the possibility of death is not an imminent concern for the listener. Dirge sings for others, to sing them to eternal sleep, only in the most dire of circumstances, but that does not mean that it hasn't happened. Any who make the mistake of facing him on the field of battle do not live to regret it. And he finds that, no matter where he looks, he cannot find it in himself to feel guilty for those deaths. |
