Biography
Would be a Gen III Barghest (Scarab|Ankh), if not for his breed. Was born during a full moon.
Virgil is his nephew, who Daeben raised after the unfortunate circumstances of Virgil's hatching...
WIP Lore:
Daeben has some of his parent's power. He can't shift, and he has a physical form, but his heritage lets him easily see the spirit realm, and spirits that have yet to pass on, animal, dragon, or others. He's likely able to guide these souls, but has never tried.
-His heritage also allows him easy access into the world of dreams, but he just as strongly avoids delving into other's dreams, and only rarely manipulates his own. He considers it strange that others don't have the same level of lucidity he has during dreams, and feels even stranger about the Auraboa, who do (in their own way, via the Loop), and Snappers, who hardly sleep at all.
-He is a librarian and part time etymologist (studies the origin of words).
-He feels most comfortable in a library, surrounded by darkness and lanternlight and books.
-He's only slightly farsighted, the glasses mostly help with blocking out the spirit world when he's trying to read.
-His inherited Barghest abilities include nearly always knowing when people lie to him, and his remarkable talent for learning other languages. He can't automatically read and speak any language (as a talented Barghest might) but it only takes about a week of study for him to become remarkably fluent in a language.
-Daeben remembers little of his early childhood, but enough to know exactly what his parents are, and to a lesser extent what he is. Many of his siblings were imperials, who carried the Barghest curse, and the others, regardless of what they were, tended to follow in the service of the Lightweaver, taking after their parents in guiding the souls of the lost. Despite not being quite sure where he was born, he suspects his egg hatched in the spirit realm. It would explain a lot.
-His later childhood was spent happily exploring his home alongside his best friends, Phenteo, Cicatriz and Jorus, and it's given him a great deal of respect for Witchborne and what they do. Phenteo and Jorus were far more interested in spirits than he was, so he tended to hang back with Cicatriz. He's had a crush on her for a long time but hasn't admitted it. Maybe someday.
-...Except Jorus absolutely knows and is gently starting to find ways to get Daeben and Cicatriz together, much to Daeben's embarrassment.
-(Unless stated otherwise) He loves his parents, and they love him back, even if he doesn't guide the souls of the dead like they do. His siblings, on the other hand, he tends to avoid, especially the barghest side of his family. More than a couple of his barghest siblings feed on souls and minds of others, and considering most of his siblings are practicing psychopomps working for the Lightweaver, he just doesn't connect to them as well. The Bound: These can be any species of dragon with a Barghest sharing inhabitance of their body. The binding can be the result of possession or, in rare cases, a mishap that can occur when a Barghest’s prey manages to pull themselves back to their body and wake up from their dreams during a feeding, tangling and pulling the Barghest back into their bodies with them. The Bound are also capable of shifting if the Barghest inside of them manages to take control.
