Cal grew up in a prestigious Lightning clan deep in the farm of the Shifting Expanse. When he was a young hatchling, his parents arranged for his betrothal to Lora Spirelily, the adopted orphan of a clan raided by harpies. They grew up together, sharing dreams with each other, planning a future where they could take over the Shockmoss clan farm.

Then as they came of age, the call of Lora's charge pulled her away. While she went on her search through Sornieth, Cal traveled to another farm to apprentice to a respected electrical engineer where he would learn to create and maintain the copper arrays that harvested lightning energy. He expected that by the time he finished his apprenticeship, Lora would have found her charge and returned to the clan. Even though his apprenticeship took years, however, there was no Lora waiting for him when he came home. Finally a letter came telling of her success and her discovery of a new clan in the Viridian Labyrinth. Surely, soon, Cal thought, she would come home, and they could start their family.

Alas, several months went by without further word. Since her letter contained little clue to where he could find this new clan, Cal left his clan and set out to track down the messenger who delivered it. After several dead ends, he finally found the young lightning fae Kess of clan Wandering Tree. Kess kindly led him through the Everbloom Gardens where he was reunited with Lora.

Once again, he was bound for disappointment. Despite their childhood dreams, Lora refused to abandon clan Wandering Tree. Her charge was tied to their garden, not to a farm in the Shifting Expanse. Cal had to choose: return alone to his clan and take over the farm with another as his mate or relinquish his claim and stay with his betrothed.
Cal chose Lora.

These days, Cal goes by 'Moss' and puts his expertise as an electrical engineer to use in producing small gadgetry and power packs. He still visits his clan to help on the farm at least once every year, but his happiness is and would always be his family with Lora.
