Iseut's fling with Cydonia ends up being a source of conflict in the clan. His previous mate is rightfully upset, and as Iseut's true character begins to show, he regrets his actions and grows distant from her. By the time their nest hatches, he is no longer speaking to her. Tending her hatchlings with a wounded heart, Iseut often refuses to let the other dragons in the clan interact with them. Instead, she teaches them on her own, doing her best to mimic her parents' teachings of diplomacy and self-defense.

Silvio is a more sickly dragon than his younger brother, and more reserved as well. As Navarro increasingly rebels against their mother to play with the clan's other hatchlings, Silvio dutifully stays at her side. Even at his young age, it is apparent to him that Iseut is lonely.

Seeing her sneak about the clan and stealthily pluck accessories and snacks from other dragons, he grows to assume that such tactics are necessary. Much smaller than his mother, and assumed innocent in his youth, his attempts at theft are surprisingly successful. Bringing his findings before his mother, he can tell that she's conflicted. Thinking his gifts inadequate, he resolves to try again. Over time, the thrill of not quite getting caught becomes increasingly appealing to him.

He's surprised when Iseut suggests he leave their lair. But as he thinks about it, the appeal of new places becomes more and more apparent. He's ready for adventure.
