Unlike every other member of the clan, Azathoth is not a dragon in any way but appearance. Its origin is unclear, as is the world it is from, for it speaks not a word to any brave enough to gaze upon its writhing, twisting form, as eternally silent as the sea at the bottom of the Leviathan Trench. It was during an excursion to the Forbidden Portal that the warriors Andromeda and Vynuoge first laid eyes upon the curling form of the entity that would come to be known as Azathoth, as it is there, in the heat of frenetic battle that they saw it: a massive, tangled form, ink-black in color and featureless in appearance was observing them, quietly, as it peered through the distorted magics of the gate of the Portal. Three green eyes, two at the sides and one set in its forehead, all without any discernible pupil, seemed to be watching their every move. A single green light dangled in front of its face, like the lure of an anglerfish. While it is an impossibility for dragonkind - or nearly any living creature, for that matter - to look through the Portal, to know and see what is on the other side, the twisting, black creature seemed unhindered in its observing, watching the battles that occurred on the other side of the Portal with great interest, as easily as if the warped reality of the Portal's gate were a simple, glass window.

Deeply unsettled by the encounter and the increasingly heavy, pressing feeling of being watched, Andromeda and Vynuoge fled from the Forbidden Portal at speed, intending to leave it and everything they've seen behind them for good. However - and not even they can answer this - Azathoth was there when they returned home, waiting. It sat curled around a rib of the Fishspine Reef, wrapped round the bone like an anaconda constricting its prey, and all three eyes were turned in their direction. It spoke not a word, moved not a muscle... and yet, the extreme feeling of unease that has followed the warriors since their departure from the Portal only increased tenfold under its unblinking gaze.

The three of them did not move - Andromeda and Vynuoge for fear, and Azathoth for the lack of a necessity in doing so. Knowing that their way into their lair was blocked with the serpentine, Spiral-like being curled above the entrance, it was then that Andromeda flew to the side, for he expected Azathoth to lunge for him. His plan was to create a distraction, so that Vynuoge may rush in and warn the others of danger while Azathoth chased him.

However, Azathoth did not move. It simply watched Andromeda's movements with disinterest, moving nary a muscle in the process. It was not here to hurt them, the two of them realized, for surely it would have done something by now if it was? But then, for the first time since they first saw it, Azathoth moved - with a slow, acknowledging nod of its head, the creature raised a single finger to its mouth, mimicking a shushing motion. As if it wished for the two to keep its presence a secret. And just like that, it vanished, with a distorted blur of static and a ripple in the very space around it.

Days, then weeks, then months passed, but Azathoth never again revealed itself.

As none of the other dragons have ever claimed to lay eyes on the creature, Andromeda and Vynuoge decided it best to keep its existence a secret, seeing no point in mentioning a being that seemed perfectly content to hide itself (except on the occasions the library was found mysteriously ransacked). The two of them thus dubbed the creature Azathoth for its unknown, eldritch nature, and never spoke of it again.

An omniscient and ancient, eldritch being, Azathoth is an entity of seeing and knowing, of observing and learning and archiving, an immortal and all-knowing caretaker of all knowledge known throughout the Ages. The information in question matters not, whether it be malicious or benign, useful or utterly worthless - for Azathoth archives it all, knows it all, stores it away from prying, curious eyes for all eternity. Forever.

Azathoth does not dwell within the lair as the others do. Instead, they reside within an other plane entirely of their own, a tear in the fabric of reality itself, wedged between dimensions like a book in a bookshelf. Their domain is a place utterly alien to dragonkind, though one of comfort to Azathoth. Where the ground is little more than fragmented, floating islands of bedrock, levitated by an unknown magic and suspended above a gargantuan, gaping maw miles and miles below, the sky is a foggy, unearthly green, shrouded eternally with a hanging green haze and dotted with watching eyes like a regular sky is dotted with puffy clouds. There is no sun, no moon, only a massive, watching eye that never blinks, never closes. Only watches. An uncountable number of books litter the entirety of the domain, and they can be found in massive stacks, everywhere, five times taller than the largest Guardian dragon, as well as in the sky, higher than any Skydancer can reach, floating ominously as if by their own will. Parchment and scrolls and tablets and tomes and pamphlets and reading material of every kind imaginable fill the numerous bookshelves and form insurmountable piles, with every single piece containing knowledge of some kind. History to war tactics to bestiaries to cooking recipes to theories on the meaning of life.

In the very heart of it all sits Azathoth, the Eternal Archivist, the Silent Watcher.

It is a guardian, of sorts, neither good nor evil, neither helpful nor antagonistic. Azathoth merely archives. Knows. Watches. Waits, quietly. That is all it is for.
