Niirnen
The Will o'Wisp

Theme Song: Starvation - Thomas Bergersen

Do not bite at the bait of pleasure, till you know there is no hook beneath it.

At first glance, Niirnen looks like a nature dragon, with her wooden and feathered apparel, and her gentle blue and green colors like a motif of earth and sky. She seems to act like one too, a sweet, gentle, nurturing, down-to-earth dragon who loves animals and long, peaceful walks in the forest. However, in this clan especially, looks are quite deceiving.

A closer examination would show that some of the small skulls she wears belong not to birds, but fae. Her innocent demeanor is hardly her true one. And Niirnen is hardly an earth dragon. She wears her birdskull headdress to hide the red of her plague eyes, out of scorn rather than a worry that they will reveal something of her to other dragons. She rejects the Plague side of her heritage, scoffing at what she thinks of as their pathetic obsession with strength, in a blasted wasteland where survival is a constant struggle. She's chosen entirely to embrace the path of nature, and the wild and primal surroundings that truly test your ability to survive by challenging you with real dangers, not just wasting diseases. She has a special connection with animals of all sorts, but especially those that live in the forest, which she marks as a sign of the Gladekeeper's acceptance of her allegiance.

Much like the region she prefers, Niirnen's appearance is deceptive. Like a welcoming tree full of beautiful, poisonous fruit, she too hides deadly danger. She is perfectly capable of acting innocent and kind, enough to fool those who don't know her true danger. She likens herself to a pitcher plant, whose sweet scent draws her unsuspecting little flies to their inescapable doom. She'll charm her prey, and then offer to take them on a walk through the woods. If she stumbles upon a lost traveler, as she especially likes to do, she will promise to guide them home.

However, her personality can change in a heartbeat. She has a hidden sadistic streak, cruel and merciless, and a surprisingly sharp intellect where traps and deceptions are concerned. She favors a slow approach, pretending worry at being lost herself, as the night begins to draw in, to savor her victim's growing fear. Then, when the moment is right, she vanishes, leaving them alone and more lost than before. But now they've been led into her territory. Although they might think they choose their path, she's manipulated them by bringing them somewhere where the only apparent path forward leads deeper into her set of traps. Sometimes they've been guided into a labyrinth, where they can only wander helplessly, or a treacherous mire full of mud and hidden sinkholes. What looks like a safe path is really beset with her traps: covered pits, sharp-toothed traps to snap shut on their leg, falling rocks, tempting bushes of poisoned berries. The forest creatures that she is so connected with will hound them, from swooping, shrieking hawks to rake their face, to howling wolf packs to pursue them. And she watches the whole time, enjoying their fear and pain, and eventual, painful, elaborately orchestrated, death. Niirnen considers herself to be a dragon who is truly red in tooth and claw.
