Flutter and her adopted sibling were born with a strange disease that causes them to produce a misty fog. The fog drives nearby dragons to insanity, and in addition, slowly kills Flutter and her sibling. Due to the fog driving dragons to insanity, no healer was willing to diagnose the two dragons. When a healer named Yerweth finally diagnosed the two dragons, it was revealed that both would die at sunset, and there was nothing Yerweth could do for the dragons. The only cure for the disease that was killing them was a medicine made from an extinct flower, and there was only one vial left. The dragon that owned it was named Nightmare. Flutter refused to accept her fate. She and her sibling set out to find Nightmare.

When they reached Nightmare, he was being hurt by a group of imperials, who looked big in comparison to Nightmare. Scars lined Nightmare’s body from the attacks of the dragons. The Imperials were trying to kill Nightmare. Nightmare stuttered in fear of being hurt by the imperials again, telling Flutter and her sibling that if they could spare his life, he would give him the medicine and spare Flutter’s life in return.

Flutter flew in the face of the Imperials and asked her what they wanted from Nightmare. The Imperials replied that they wanted a strange amulet kept at the center of Flutter’s village- an amulet guarded by Coatl dragons in the Light Flight’s temple. If Flutter could obtain the amulet, the Imperial Dragon would spare Nightmare. Otherwise, Nightmare would be killed. Flutter thought about her choices.

If she chose to grab the amulet, Flutter and her sibling might die fighting the Light dragons. If she chose to not get the Amulet, Nightmare would die and the last cure that could help her would die along with Nightmare. Also, the amulet was in a temple to the Light Flight. What if a sacred and powerful artifact wound up in the wrong hands? But the more she thought about this, the less she worried. Light Magic was mostly used for healing, not harm- even the spells that harm people also heal someone else.

Flutter eventually chose to get the amulet. A big chance of dying to Coatls was better than a guarantee she would pass away from her illness. So, she flew to the center of the village. The Coatls guarding the amulet bit and scratched Flutter in a frenzy, while her sibling was unharmed by the Coatls, as he was from the Light Flight. As she flew, Flutter was struck with blasts of light magic, and her wings were torn. Flutter eventually managed to sneak through all the Coatls and grabbed the amulet, but she was severely injured. Blood was dripping from her wounds, and her wings were broken beyond repair.

Upon obtaining the amulet, Flutter slowly walked over to Nightmare and the Imperials. Her entire body was aching from the battle. Flutter gave the Imperials the amulet, and they left Nightmare alive as promised.

Nightmare told them that the medicine would not only cure the dragon who took it, but make them immortal. However, though the immortal dragon would not age or die from disease, the immortal dragon could still die from injuries. Lastly, Nightmare told them that the medicine could not be split between two dragons, or it will lose its effects forever and neither dragon will get healed.

Upon finishing this lecture, Nightmare handed them the medicine. However, there was only one vial of the medicine, and two sick dragons that needed it to survive. Whoever took the medicine would be immortal, but whoever didn’t take it would die. Flutter had to decide whether she would take the medicine and let her sibling die, or sacrifice herself for her sibling. She only had so much time to choose, as in only a minute, the sun would set and both Flutter and her sibling would die.

Flutter looked up at the sunset, then down at her battle scars. It came to her that she was weak from the battle against the Coatls, and the medicine could not protect her from her wounds. If she were to take the medicine, she would surely die from her wounds soon after. Flutter’s sibling would die to protect a doomed dragon if she took it. Flutter gave her sibling the medicine. At the end of the day, he would get more use out of it than Flutter. She then looked up at the setting sun as it set below the highest mountain peak, and took a deep breath as she closed her eyes, her soul at peace.
