B I O G R A P H Y
"I'm too perfect for this world..."
My heart lit up with a sense of perfection, knowing this is where I belong, gliding through the deep blue water as the cool waves brushed past my cheeks and down through my body, my blue scales reflecting off the clear water above me. Fish scrambled around me, confused and dazed yet excited to see something so bright in their path.
I finally broke the surface, water rushinging around my throat in a perfect manner as to not create any friction that’d slow me down. I shook off the remaininging drops as I left my home, putting on small bits of clothing and cloth around my neck. It was a way I showed my respect for the other world we allied with.
I made my way to their territory, I made sure every piece was in place. I passed by many merchants selling a large variety of things, from seafood to expensive apparel. A few scarfs caught my eye, but I fought the temptation to go on a shopping spree. Though, I did pick up a few gifts for our allies.
I walked past the guards surrounding the heavily guarded castle, saying hi to a few on the way. The queen was expecting me, quickly scurrying down to greet me.
“Sapphire!” She exclaimed, her excitement filtering through her exhausted voice.
“Hello your majesty.” I smiled, my eyes flickering towards her daughter menacingly standing behind her.
Everytime I met her daughter, I made sure I treated her even nicer than everyone else. I really wanted her to like me. She seemed so standoff-ish, she refused to make eye contact with me for more than a few seconds, and when she did, it wasn’t pleasant. She just has the general aura of hatred and fear, but I couldn’t understand why.
She’d join the conversations on occasion, never saying more than a few words.
“I brought you a few gifts.” I spoke, holding out three ambush stones I’d bought on the way here.
“Ah, my love! You didn’t have to! They’re so pricey around these parts, I’ll make sure they go to good use!” She winked, handing them off to another dragon who quickly came to her aid.
“Sit with us for dinner, dear. You can stay the night in our guest bed, there’s no need for any rush. You came all this way!” She said, ushering me towards the dining hall.
I knew better than to protest, walking alongside her towards the sweet aroma floating down the hall. A few other dragons quickly rushed to my side, grabbing my chair and making sure my forks were exactly straight. Which, in my opinion, was weird. Our family was much more casual, we ate just as any other family would.
The Queen's daughter sat uncomfortably close, in the chair next to mine even though she could’ve chosen any chair in the building. Suddenly, the luscious red and gold covering the grand walls of this room seemed so small, confining, suffocating. It was scary.
“Hey, Linsey. How are yo-”
“Can I talk to you out of this room?” She quickly spoke, cutting me off.
My breath caught in my throat for a moment, before I hesitantly nodded. Not making eye contact with me once, she stood and started to walk out of the room. I stumbled after her, my legs still in shock from what in the world was happening.
“Where are you two going?” Her mother giggled, taking a sip from her drink, clearly laced with some sort of alcohol.
“Sapphire just wants to know where the bathroom is,” I do? “I’M walking her there.” She spoke, completely monotone.
“Alright, be back soon! You didn’t finish your food!” She finished, turning back to her other guests.
Linsey sped up, quickly maneuvering between each hallway before suddenly stopping and turning to face me. I stopped back a few feet as I almost ran into her after her rash movements. That was the first time in years she’d really looked in my eyes, and she seemed confident, powerful. She knew she had the upper hand.
“Are you one to believe in dark magic?” She plainly asked, leaving me confused as to why she’d ask such a random question.
“I mean, yeah? I guess so? I know it’s performed when someone has such a sense of anger and hatred for someone that they curse them in order to relieve themself and restore what they think is.. right.” I started to slow, watching Linsey's features morph into something I couldn’t quite understand.
“Oh.” I whispered, my body felt cold as my lips finally let out that one singular word. And with it, her face seemed to morph into a soft understanding.
“My mother,” She started, staring at the wall behind my trembling heart, “Has never loved someone as much as she’s loved you.” She smiled, once again meeting my eyes.
“And no matter how much I gave her, the effort I put in for her, she’s always favored you. I’m tired of being the second best, Sapphire. I’m tired of my mother treating you as her favorite. I’m tired. I’m just so tired.” She softly spoke, tears finding their way to the corner of her weary eyes.
“I respect you, Sapphire. I really do. I know you’ve tried to be nice to me, I know you've just done your best. And because of that, I will not kill you.”
“Thank you.” I breathed, relief flooding throughout every tense vein.
“But, I can’t leave it there. You have ten minutes to get back into water, and you will never come onto land again. If you do, the spirit who will forever accompany you, will make sure that will be your last breath of air above ground. Now, go.” She spoke.
“Look at me.” My voice broke through the moment, startling my counterpart.
One last time, she met my eyes, regret washing over her mocha eyes.
“You’re worthy, Linsey. You’re worth the world. And I know it might not seem like it, but I promise your mother loves you more than you believe. I can see how tired she is, but when she asked where you were going, she cared enough to worry about her daughter's safety. You’ll be okay.” I genuinely smiled, tears warmly falling down my face as I realized the consequences of her actions. I’d never be allowed to be on land again.
“I’m sorry.” She whispered, a ghost of who she once was.
And that was the last time I saw her.
