LEOSTER
forgive me, friends, for i have lost my way
___
1ssTfOe.png
The only thing Leoster had been able to take with him when he left home was a locket, worn and well-loved, that was tied on a string with double-knotted ends. When the setting sun glanced off the metal of it, it shone strangely, and Leoster would see the glow behind his eyelids hours after the sun disappeared over the horizon.

Inside was nothing, not a picture nor comforting keepsake, and Leoster could not recall there ever having been one. It was simply him and the locket; a pair unwanted by those they once called family.

Leoster isn't sure a locket can even feel things, of course, but the sensation linger in the edge of his bones, clinging to the sinew and blood that keeps him together. The locket feels. It is some form of sentient, radiating joy when the skies are clear and surrounded by a terrible malaise should thunder rattle the world. And Leoster has no one else, not anymore. There is no one but him and the locket.

So he tucks it close when he lies down to sleep, clutching it as tightly as his pearl, and hides it in his mane whenever someone passes by. The locket croons softly at him, appreciative and warm, and thanks him most graciously for keeping it safe.

And it speaks more to him as time pass by.

The locket asks him for a pinch of salt one night, hopeful and uncertain, and who would Leoster be to deny it? He fetches it salts, sprinkles some inside of it, and locks it tightly. Its warmth grows until it is almost painful, the thin string it hangs on blackening where the metal touches. Leoster decides not to mind it.

Next, the locket asks for a piece of crystal; the magic kind. It is very specific and Leoster sees no reason to deny it. He tracks down a few slivers of crystal, each little piece humming with magic, and tucks it into the locket.

It asks for more, and more, and more. Leoster provides time and time again, never questioning it, because he had no one else. If it meant him harm, he is confident he would know, and it is a locket. How dangerous could it possibly be?

The locket asks for blood. And Leoster?

Leoster provides.
