Tenebris Lichenshroud was born with the rare mutation that gave him many more eyes then he should have, but they were never excluded because of this. In fact, he grew up in a small but loving family, and had a fairly happy early childhood.
That all changed when they were seven years old, and got lost in the forest during a game of hide and seek. They searched for a way back home but it only got them more lost, and by the time darkness fell, they were still far from home. He curled up on a tree stump and tried not to cry as he hoped that his family would find him soon.
They didn’t, at least not before someone else did. A nocturne approached him and introduced herself as Chandraneel, who offered to let him stay the night in her lair so that they could find his family in the morning. Tenebris agreed, and was led to her lair, where he was introduced to the young fae that lived with her, Specter. They got along great, and Tenebris fell asleep that night with laughter ringing in his ears.
The next morning Chandraneel woke him up and explained that she already found his family, and that they told her that they didn’t want them anymore. They were crushed, but took solace in the fact that Chandraneel and Specter could be their family now. Even if sometimes they missed their siblings, or wondered how their parents were doing without them.
Years later, he met a dragon named Lethe, and spoke with her in secret while the other two were asleep. They formed a close bond, and one day she told him that his parents had been looking for him all these years, Chandraneel had been lying to him. Tenebris almost couldn’t believe it, but eventually Lethe convinced him to escape the clutches of the dragon who had been keeping him captive all this time.
Tenebris was so close to freedom, so close to seeing his real family again, but then he was caught. Lethe managed to scare Chandraneel off but not before he was left with permanent scars, but however much it cost, he was free. Lethe led him back to his family and they accepted him with open arms. Reunited at last.
In the years since Tenebris has taken up painting, and is commonly seen with paint staining their claws and a brush tucked behind their frill. The years they spent with Chandraneel still haunt him, however. They fashioned a mask in her likeness to hide his scars and still has nightmares about the night he escaped. Most of all though, he regrets that he was never able to go back and rescue Specter.
He wonders if his friend ever did get away, and how he’s doing now.
