His earliest memory is dusty, trapped in the haze of time, but he can never scrub it wholly from his mind. It is a part of him, like the very bones that hold him up and the hide that covers him, and Gerhart has learned to accept that. It is not a happy memory, not quite, nor is it a bad one. Gerhart cannot decide how he feels about it. The snows had been harsh, he'd been told, and every dragon and creature in the clan was battling the piles upon piles of build-up. Dragons shuffled from hut to hut, following narrow paths carved into the high snow, and every hearth was blazing from dusk to dawn. They would sleep huddled together, nestled beneath furs and thick woollen blankets, and Gerhart had been the most spry and wild of his siblings. He remembers creeping outside in the night and peering up at the wall of snow outside, the sky dark and gloomy. The moon had been hiding behind thick clouds that lazily drifted above, tugged this way and that by the breeze, and the air had smelled of seawater and the crisp, biting scent of deep winter. And Gerhart remembers glancing back inside, eyes catching on his family curled up around the hearth. The light from the flames had bathed in the warmest colours. It would be the last time he ever saw them. The moments that followed are warped, fraying at the seams, and muddled. Gerhart does not dare speculate if it's the trauma or the passing of time; he does not wish to recall it, he thinks. Thinking back only brings up a sense of encompassing dread and fear, the sensations of falling, and the biting chill of frigid seawater filling his lungs. He knows he must have fallen over the edge of the cliffs, must have tumbled into the sea like a proper fool, but he is glad not to remember the details. But it lingers with him still, etched into his bones, and a shiver borne of dread creeps down his spine as he stares out over the calm seas. It has been years, since that day, and years since he awoke on an abandoned shoreline so far from his childhood home. He has yet to return, to let them know he lives still. Perhaps he never will. Perhaps he wants to, but is afraid to, and perhaps the indecisiveness has festered too deeply for him to rip it out. Like every day before, Gerhart shakes off the malaise and turns his back on the ocean; tomorrow, he thinks. I will figure out what to do next... tomorrow. | _ |
