Biography

DELTA
POST-APOCALYPTIC SCIENTIST
[ Plague Blossom ]

NOTES:
- Sibling to Rush, their withering brother whom they are desperately trying to keep alive.
- General gist is 'scientist in the beginning of a disaster movie who's right about the coming doom but isn't taken seriously', who subsequently survives the coming doom and develops into an actively dangerous figure in the post-apocalypse.
- Was able to see the apocalypse coming before anyone else. They tried to warn everybody, they really did - to raise awareness, to propose solutions, to study and engineer relentlessly to prevent it. But nobody listened. Delta had grown up being ignored and spoken over by society, and to have it happen yet again, over something so important, made them snap. They grew bitter and jaded.
- When the apocalypse became inevitable, they focused on preparing; they assembled a massive bunker, stocked it with everything they possibly could, and spent their remaining time designing and building specialized equipment they'd need for withstanding the coming storm.
- They watched, safe behind their stone walls, as the world above tore itself to pieces. What fragments of the population weren't wiped outright were unable to restart society as it had once been. Supply chains buckled, farms withered to dust, people fought and died in the streets. Animalistic anarchy, as it had always been: the true nature of people when their veneer of civilization was peeled back. Of course. Delta was not surprised at the disgusting incivility of it all; if anything, they were vindicated.
- They loved the world: nature, in all her glory, was their one true love; they could not bear to see her flagrant destruction begin anew, not after she had been pushed to the brink of nonexistence already. When they walked among the ruins, they saw around them not burnt-out skeletons, nor ghosts, nor haunting memories. No - they saw life, healing, the green vines that curled up around those concrete bones. They saw the forests grow tall and strong, fed by a rain that washed away the blood and contamination of civilization's greed.
- And what were those people doing, those few lucky souls who had survived the disaster? They were destroying it. Look at how the trees felled around their lands. Look at how they scavenged among their old monuments, brought those smoke-sputtering engines back from the grave, spewed poison wherever they went. To Delta, they were defying a clear message: the universe had acknowledged that they were a mistake, tried to hit the 'undo' button. Any who still remained were flagrantly defying the righteous and just will of fate.
- So Delta took action. The species could not be allowed to perpetuate. They were a pox, a virus, a thing nature's immune system was trying to reject. They had to be eradicated.
- Aside from their spite towards society for all it did to them, Delta is also motivated by the suffering of their brother, Rush. The apocalypse - a sort of plant-based contagion - had wrapped itself around his bones. Vines grew deep into his flesh, integrated with his body, made themselves inseparable. It became impossible to safely remove the growths without removing some critical organ system as well.
- Though Delta cannot currently cure him, they can keep him alive. He must remain isolated, in a chamber where no spores nor seedlings can escape and infect Delta as well, and the growths must be periodically (and painfully) trimmed down. A fragile equilibrium of sunlight and poison is required to prevent the growths from dying nor flourishing. It is a terrible way to exist, and they feel guilty for every minute he continues to live it.
- Delta takes regular trips to the outside world to perform research. Aside from eliminating the inklings of civilization wherever they find them, their primary goal is to find a way to cure Rush's ailment for good. A part of them knows, deep down, that it is likely too late for any hope to be had, but they cannot stop now - they've come too far, done too much in his name to take it all back. All they can hope for is his continued survival.
