These dragons are only spoken of in hushed tones or euphemisms, because it’s believed that to do otherwise is to invite some terrible misfortune into your path. Although their origins are much contested, those old enough to remember the early days of the Third Age tell stories of an ominous background. The writhing forms of their ancestors are said to have emerged, like black serpents, from the gaping mouths of hopeless corpses. They are said to be wish-granters, capable of miracles, but to harness their power welcomes ill luck. Whoever strikes a deal with them meets an evil fate, often as a result of their wish. Those brave--or foolish--enough to think they can harness their power sometimes venture into the deepest parts of the plague realm, where these dragons are thought to slumber. Most do not return, but even the unlucky few who make it out of their treacherous, barren home, are said to be forever changed by whatsoever it is that they might have encountered on their journey.
