Fool's Gold Aberrant Idol
Fires that shook me once, but now to silent ashes fall'n away.
Cold upon the dead volcano sleeps the gleam of dying day.

At the center of the Embergrounds is a castle. Sort of.

At the center of the Embergrounds is an enormous pit of tar. If you happen to make it through the woods, the trees give way to it, desolate and smoldering. And inside that pit, is the castle.

Now, you could say it sunk into the pit. But that wouldn't explain it. Because you see the castle is inverted. If it had sunken, wouldn't its turrets and towertops scrape the surface of the tar? They don't. They're at the very, very bottom. If you submerge yourself in the tar (why would you submerge yourself in the tar), you'll come out on the other side, and find yourself at the base of the keep, as if in another world. A world with a flat black sky. As if the castle in the tar were a reflection of a castle above it, the kind you see on a lake, dark and still. But there is no castle left above, and no lake. No stillness, no reflection.

But darkness? Plenty.

You've come a long way, haven't you?

He says, and tar bubbles out of his throat.

A large, imposing obelisk, his jaw opens in an unsettling way when he speaks, and when he moves, it's as if he's about to come apart. But he never does. His eyes suggest a smile that his maw can't quite make. He cocks his head, slowly, intentionally, as he stares at you, and you hear the glossy grind of bones and marble.

The King is away at present, but we are still here. I've been here for years and years. Long before the King, actually. At this, he does manage to smile. More tar.

Now, I'm supposed to tell you to leave. The smile widens. But I won't. Who am I to judge how or why you came? I certainly wouldn't appreciate such a thing. I won't say that no one comes here by accident, but I will say that no one comes here easily. And leaving? Wider, and wider. So many teeth, so much ichor... Even more difficult.

So stay as long as you please, or don't please.

He pads back to the center of the room, and the light of the enormous hearth at its core casts a glow to his pale back. As the firelight passes over him, you see veins of molten gold glittering across his hide. He settles himself in the great, opulent den-bed nested in the middle of the regal chamber that most certainly isn't his.

Just don't say I didn't warn you.
