A lot of dragons were afraid of the mist.
Thick and imposing, it came without warning, enveloping any dragon unfortunate enough to be caught in its wake. It was easy for a dragon to get lost in the mists. For them to think they were going one way in the swirling fog, go another, and never be seen again.
And, worse — things lurked in the mist. Strange shadows, creatures without names. The Blacksand Annex in the firelands had the worst of the stories (stories of dragons not being lost, but taken) but anywhere in the realm you went, these terrifying tales about the mist emerged.
Etsuko wasn't afraid of the mist.
When she was a fledgling, her adoptive mother would seek out the fog. She taught Etsuko where the mists were most likely to emerge; in mountainous valleys where the clouds themselves seemed to descend from the skies; on cold nights out on the sea or beside lakes and rivers, especially where the water was warm; downwind in the Scarred Wasteland, where plague gasses would migrate.
And in their home among the verdant jungles in the Gladeskeeper's realm, when the warm spring and summer rains came, the fog would often come rolling in between the trees and engulf them in its past.
Her mother taught her: you couldn't trust your eyes in the mist. Its thick clouds and swirling shapes would lead one astray, if you tried to follow what you saw. So, rely on other things. Etsuko learned to use her inborn light magic to pierce the veil, and provide a beacon for her and her mother to follow.
And one day, her mother sat her down and told her about the creatures lurking in the mist.
Nobody knew what they really were. Some dragons suspected they were remnants of the Shade. Some said they were monsters formed from the mist itself, full of malice and hate. Some said they were ghosts who died in battle.
Whatever they were, they existed, and they were dangerous.
It was her mother's duty to find these creatures, wherever they were, and fight them away. To guide lost dragons through the fog, to make sure they never encountered them in the first place. Most of all: to keep dragons safe.
And when she came of age, Etsuko did the same.
It's hard, dangerous work, even as familiar with the fog as she is, for the creatures in the mist are smart and they'd love more than anything to finally claim someone who has spent so long thwarting them. But it's her mother's legacy, and it's hers as well, and no monster from the mist will lay a talon on the dragons in the Viridian Labyrinth as long as she lives.
