She had always been fond of red. Beyond being the color of her wings, it was the color of jasper, of apples, of good strong iron. Of tulips and webwings, serthis and croakers.
It was the color of her favorite bandana, of the skies and the rising sun the day she set out on her Search. Those bright reds faded to swirls of pink and purple as the day wore on and so Firelight aimed her travels towards the Starfall isles. Skirting the edge of Water Flight territory, she resisted the urge to bargain with their soothsayers for advice on her journey. 'The price will be too steep,' she thought. 'Let this be an adventure. It'll be fun.'
And it was.
For all she'd read, researched, and been lectured on by her birthclan, the world beyond the Sunbeam Ruins was still new and enthralling. Everything was new and bright and most importantly, exciting. (Fishing underwater is nothing like fishing in a river! Sky pirates are a thing! The things on the end of toridae chew toy laces are called aglets!) Though she intended to head straight for the Arcane domain, things kept happening. She veered off course for one reason or another. But after every distraction, she always found herself heading back towards that mystical isle.
As the Wandering Contagion slowly gave way to the Starwoods, she saw it. A horrible creature, that might have once been a dragon, harrying and attacking a small party of dragons.
And then, she felt it. After so much time on her Search, she finally felt it. That tug. And it was pulling her towards that party, now desperately fighting for their lives.
Adventure (and Destiny!) awaited. She angled her wings and dropped like a stone, nailing the abomination dead center in the back.
It was not a glorious fight.
It was nothing like the what the stories and histories she learned as a hatchling described, or her practice bouts in the coliseum. It was messy and horrifying. The beast roared and screamed as it rended flesh. It howled with each crack of bones breaking.
There was so much blood. Bright red, her favorite color. It was everywhere, oozing from wounds, on the ground, in the air, down her throat. Firelight felt sick.
But her assault had bought time to allow some of the party to flee and return with help. Severely out numbered, the beast was finally brought down.
In the aftermath, Firelight had exactly two things to say:
"That was not fun," followed by, "I feel sick." Which was when she passed out.
She woke in care of the clan's healers. The creature's blood was toxic, but living so close to the border between Arcane and Plague had given them more experience than they ever wanted.
"You should be fit as a fiddle! But... there were some complications with that toxin..."
It stained. As it coursed over her hide in the heat of battle, it marked her: bright red rivulets that trailed all over her body.
It wasn't a contagion, they were sure of that. But nothing they tried removed the stain. Firelight told them she didn't mind.
It was her color, after all.
