I TRY AND TRY

______ Acceptance stared at the horizon, waves crashing around him on the grassy island he was on. Stubborn seafoam clung to the craggy bases of the cliffs, unwilling to let go of the rocks as they were pulled away by a mixture of sweeping zephyrs and rushing water. Bamboo reeds sprouted up in between the little piles of earth as if reaching for the morning sun; just risen, its gentle rays reflecting in shimmery streaks of light on the bubbling water. Dozens of other dragons filled the place for the same reason as him - partake in the race.

______ He struggled to stay grounded on the peaks, violent winds wrapping around the Pearlcatcher as he stood at the starting line marked by blackened grass, burnt away to function as the start of his potential recognition of a renowned athlete. As the starting horn echoed throughout the steep cliffs of the Reedcleft Ascent, Acceptance took off in a hurried swoop, his giant wings catching the air in an instant. He glided up to the sky, eyes narrowed in focus, bracing for the jarring impact of another beat of wind in his face. It was bound to happen: the wind was erratic and unpredictable. That was what made it difficult to get to the top.

______ But he was Acceptance - a dragon made of unwavering determination and willpower to make it to glory. He would claw his way to the top, no matter what.

______ As he barely scraped to the next island, a heavy gale battered him backwards, and he tumbled back a few meters in front of the start line, nearly colliding with several other dragons on the spongy earth. Acceptance gritted his teeth in frustration, before pouncing into the air with such ferocity he felt the wind shriek in his ears. A laugh so derisive he never thought he possessed escaped from deep in his chest as he soared toward the sky, almost vengeful.

______ Merciless was the wind, and so was he. Tired of losing; he was sick of it. He would prove to be one worthy of winning. Through the air Acceptance will climb, higher and higher, past the reeds and trees, above the waters, till he reaches the top before the others - and get the acceptance he craves for. -By StarryLune
