T he Carousel is bright and vibrant, a myriad of painted animals impaled on golden spiraling poles. They spin around and around, beckoning passersby to step up to the platform.

This is the tale of the Barghest, Carousel

Hor-divider-640.png
The Night Circus always appears at dusk. It unfurls amidst the dusty air, its tents spreading open like the wings of a great beast and its lights glittering like a thousand shining eyes. Among mortals, the Night Circus is a place of fairytale and most brush it off as a mirage. A simple trick of the last vestiges of light.

Indeed, the Night Circus was never meant for mortals. It beckons instead to those who have already passed from life - a lure for those lost spirits who perished amidst the endless desert sands. It pulls them into its embrace - striped canvas parting to reveal its dark interior. It feeds upon these spirits, but on occasion a living mortal staggers in through the tents as well. The circus welcomes them all the same, for most of the living are not long for the world. Soon they pass and the circus devours them too.

It is from the remains of such travelers that new life emerges. They are creatures crafted from the same dark magic that dwells within the tents, its tendrils reaching out and wrapping around the remains. . . yet the magic pulls other things in as well. The first of such creatures were not born beneath the full moon’s light, but they still inherited the curses of other beings that the circus swallowed. They were among the few things that emerged from the dark maw of the great tent, their forms concealed within a tangle of performer’s clothing and scraps of the same canvas material that comprises the circus itself.

Like their mother, the beasts of the circus lure their prey with promises of spectacle and wonder. Perhaps a quiet voice beckons in the night or the soft chime of bells rings out from the darkness. “Come one, come all!” The circus’ children whisper.

The entry is written in faded ink, a date scrawled at the top of the page next to a short title that reads “Carousel”. It is the account of one Marcus Talbot, regarding childhood memories of a strange carousel.

"I still remember the night when the circus came to town. My brother and I begged our parents to take us. We could see the great tents in the distance, their brilliant lights flickering against a dusky sky. Our parents sighed, but they hesitantly agreed in the end.

The main tent was a great canopy of striped fabric above us as we approached the circus and we were filled with curiosity, excitement, and wonder. There was a pale man standing at the parted maw of the tent who greeted us with a curtsy and a smile, his outstretched arm welcoming us inside. My brother and I rushed in, our parents trailing behind.

Inside that tent there were a great many strange things. Perhaps some of them would have terrified me had I not still been a child. At the heart of the strange circus, my brother and I came across a Carousel. It was a massive, dazzling, contraption comprised of painted beasts suspended on spiraling golden poles. We rushed to the platform eagerly. I was vaguely aware of our parents' voices. "Be careful" they called, but we were already stepping onto the carousel and grasping those golden poles.

Most of the painted beasts on the carousel were recognizable; horses, tigers, giraffes, even an elephant all polished in glistening resin. As I glanced around, however, I noticed that there were resin beasts that didn't seem to belong on that carousel at all. Several of them were dragons. Where the majority of the animals were poised majestically with snarling, staring faces, those dragons were frozen in bizarrely contorted poses and the expressions they bore were those of terror and pain. They were disturbingly realistic and several of them appeared to be missing limbs.

I chose to ignore the dragons, instead choosing a large white horse as my steed. If I turned, I could see my brother several feet behind me as he selected a prancing gazelle. Our parents watched from the side of the Carousel, smiling and waving at us as the great platform began to turn.

It was great fun for a time. We spun around and around, watching for our parents with each rotation. The carousel seemed to turn faster and faster, the sidelines blurring by. . and I can't recall if the expressions on our parents' faces changed before that final rotation when they had disappeared. That was when I began to feel afraid.

My brother cried out behind me and I turned to see him staring at something that appeared to be swinging closer, its many hands grasping at the golden poles of the carousel as it pulled itself along. It moved so quickly, that I couldn't make out the entirety of its form, but it appeared to have a twisted wolf-like face with shallow, sunken pits where its eyes should have been. It sported far too many mismatched arms that erupted from its body at odd angles and a long, flowing tail trailed behind it. That thing was as brightly colored as the carousel itself and it seemed to be scenting the air as it moved closer, landing with a thump behind my brother.

I heard him scream as that thing brought two of its bizarre hands before its face, creating rings out of the thumb and forefinger on each hand and placing them before its empty eye sockets. Its head jolted down then as if it were staring at my brother and it craned its head closer and closer. I thought certainly it would devour him. . . but I realized with horror that its face was only a distraction.

The other hands behind the monstrous thing grasped a golden carousel pole, one end pointed into a sharpened spear. I suddenly realized where all those resin dragons had come from and I could do nothing to save my brother from the same fate.

I'm not certain how the beast didn't come for me as well. . . I held my breath as it passed by, disappearing amidst the myriad of painted animals. The carousel stopped after that and I staggered as quickly as I could away from it. I ran past the remainder of the bizarre attractions in the circus and passed that pale man standing at the door. He smiled at me, bowing and tipping his hat as I exited.

"I hope your experience tonight was astounding, young man. An evening you will never forget".

Marcus Talbot was taken in and raised by his aunt after the sudden mysterious disappearance of his parents and brother. We have heard numerous rumors about the 'Night Circus' and the bizarre encounters that attendants have experienced within those tents. I am fairly certain that the circus is run by a troupe of Goblins, although what business they have with the Barghests is unknown. - A. Rowan
