Biography

Daeva
|| Spirit of Cleansing Fire || Primal Nature Dryad ||
sanity is madness put to good uses

The tree loomed before him, massive and ancient. It's rough, time-weathered bark had been carved into countless reliefs of every manner of creature. Creatures of the air and the sea cavorted next to creatures of flame and shadow. The carvings were primitive, but primal, and their power compelling. The door was the only part of the tree left unadorned, but from behind it he swore he could hear a voice singing with such unearthly beauty that chills crawled across his bones while drawing him closer… Hesitant but intrigued the young earth dragon reached for the door handle, a simple wooden bar with nothing but flames carved into it. As his claws touched it, the door splintered beneath his grasp, wood that was moments ago solid appearing rotted and primeval. The singing trailed off as the door fell apart before the young tundra. It let out a rasp as stale air washed over him, ruffling his bright red fur.

“Hello?” a melodically husky voice called out from the tree, “is someone there?” Before he could decide how to answer (or if he should), a tundra, like him and yet so very unlike him, stepped out from behind the remains of the door. She smiled at his surprise, “Not what you were expecting, was I?”

“Uh… not quite…” he trailed away, glancing at the carvings on the tree again, “What’s with the tree?” She followed your gaze to the ancient artwork, “Ah, so that’s what it looks like from this side….” she seemed to get lost in thought for a time. After a moment, she gave a small shake and returned her gaze to Ember, “I suppose my siblings thought that making a prison beautiful would make it less of the horror that it is,” she gave a small sigh, “they always did think in terms of beauty.” She wandered over to observe the scenes more closely. He followed hesitantly, not sure if he should take this opportunity to flee, “Prison…?” he questioned lightly, poised to run.

“Oh, yes,” came her absent reply, “as if you could fully contain a literal force of nature…” she gave a delicate snort of derision, “I’d call them airheads, but that feels like I’d be doing a disservice to the birds.” Intrigued, the red coated tundra moved closer to her, “What kind of force of nature? Do you cause fruit to ripen? Or flowers to bloom?” She gave a half smile that he couldn't interpret and says, “Oh no, child, I am the embodiment of devastating transformation.” Nervous again he cleared his throat, “Ah… what does that mean?” She flexed her wings, sparks igniting in her woolen coat and the smell of smoke filled the air, “Have you ever seen a wildfire?” she asked mildly.

He back up a step, or three, “Aren’t wildfires the domain of fire elementals? Why are you so… forest-y?” She gave her husky laugh, “Oh, you are young, aren’t you? Child, not even the gods are purely one or the other. Without fire, underbrush would choke away new growth and the forests would stagnant. We are never wholly only one thing. Stagnation kills as surely as devastation… something my siblings never understood.” She returned to studying the carvings on her prison.

She seemed unlikely to spontaneously burst into flame, so he risked another question, “So… if you were locked up, why did the forest continue to grow and change?” She looked over at her shoulder, amused, “I am a primal spirit of nature, they locked away only my physical form; while I couldn’t enjoy the world and influence directly, my domain still exists… I don’t know why my siblings didn’t try something else when it was clear that they didn’t hobble my power entirely… maybe they lacked the knowledge of how to do it properly… Dryads aren’t exactly known for their intellectual achievements.”

“If... dryads aren’t supposed to be smart, why are you so… different? All the ones I’ve seen before are rather… flighty?” Becoming more serious than he'd seen her yet, she regarded him with her dark eyes, flames burning deep behind them, “Transformation can be very painful, and wisdom is known to result from pain,” her mouth crooked into a charming, self-deprecating smile, “When you’ve lived as long as I have and have ushered in countless rebirths, you become very wise indeed.” Since she didn't seem inclined to smite him, he risked one last question, “So, uh, what now?”

She turned to look at the horizon, covered in forested hills, alive with birdsong. She took a deep breath as the smell of smoke once again filled the air and he heard flames crackle, “Now? My dear Ember," She dubbed him as she observed her sparks settling in his fur, leaving behind bright spots of yellow, "Now, it’s time to nurture some phoenixes.”
