HADAL ; deep scavenger

═══════════════════════════════════════════

The dark water clutched, grabbed at them, invisible current pulling the fallen dragon deeper, deeper, down into the black abyss, to where the light wouldn't reach. Not that it mattered; they were too far from shore, and with their injured wing, they'd never manage to get back to the surface or airborn again before they sank. That aside, their fur was weighing them down so much that they would just sink again if they managed to reach the surface. No, it had been over for them before they even hit the current.

They opened their eyes, wondering for a moment if light was a part of dying. They'd heard stories, of course. 'Don't go into the light!' was a common phrase in silly stories and playground games. Still, they'd imagined something more... warm, enveloping. The light they saw now was a single tiny, blue star floating in the vastness.

Or maybe it wasn't so tiny. It was growing—no, getting closer. Larger. A lantern, not a celestial glow. A single, round lantern clasped around the neck of another dragon. A long, sinuous blue shape illuminated by one, tiny glow. The guardian swam in close, wrapping both foreclaws around the dragon's midsection. It pulled them through the water, strong tail and limbs propelling them rapidly through the depths.

(There's air nearby,) A voice whispered in the drowning dragon's head, soft and quiet and comforting, (I know the currents are strong, but don't worry, I'd never let another dragon drown down here.)

Hadal used to live alone. She'd always had a preference for deeper waters, and she had never exactly been a people person; in fact, she usually found herself overwhelmed and awkward in social situations. This, combined with a love of solitude and a hobby of scavenging the bottoms of deep ravines and sunken ships, led her away from her home clan, and to the nameless ravine where she'd eventually make her home. She broke into the caverns while exploring, and found a whole network of tunnels filled with the ruins of ancient sanctuaries and temples built by some unknown precursor, some even free of water (via magical wards, of course). Hadal, delighted by this discovery, decided she would dedicate her life to the study of these ancient ruins.

The nameless ravine, however, was situated underneath the flow of a uniquely strong current. Normally safe to swim by, during certain times, a surface whirlpool would form, and any dragon unlucky enough to land near it would be dragged down to the depths. This was the unfortunate geographical feature that would eventually introduce her to her closest companion, Acheron.

The poor tundra had been driven out of his old lair, and in desperation, had swam for the shore, looking for shelter from a storm and finding himself accidentally dragged deep below, pushed downwards by strong currents. Hadal, who had been out fishing, spotted the movement at the edge of her vision, and, in a moment of foolish curiosity, swam to investigate.

Acheron was the first dragon she rescued. She carried him swiftly back to the Abyss Castle, letting him rest in the cool air deep below and bringing him food while he recovered.

While the two initially remained somewhat separate, with Hadal not terribly comfortable with strangers and Acheron still recovering from his injuries, he eventually managed to get her to stay long enough to give him her name, and talk a little bit. Having been a scholar in his old clan, Acheron was interested in Hadal's discoveries. Over time, as Acheron recovered, she showed him more places among the caves, and the two of them grew from reluctant acquaintances, to friends, to romantic interests (though they are subtle about it, and prefer not to flaunt their relationship—they are shy people.) Together, and with such a close relationship, they agreed to stay together down below.

A few years later, another would join them. Anglerscale and his best friend, Brightfin, who had been fleeing from some deep predator, stumbled into the caves to escape. Hadal and Acheron had hidden at first, hoping that the two mirrors would leave after a time. However, the leviathan, which had followed them, broke into the caverns. Hadal and Acheron, unable to stand by while two unprepared dragons were eaten by a sea monster, joined the fray to protect them. Together, they drove the leviathan out, and Acheron and Hadal helped nurse the two mirrors back to health.

A week or so after this, the four dragons had a long talk. They were in dangerous waters, and these caves were the only safe place. The mirrors wanted to stay, Acheron and Hadal had been there first. Quiet throughout most of the discussion, Hadal contemplated whether or not she'd want to give up her solitude—she'd come here to get away, after all. She'd always wanted to avoid people.

But she'd been lost when she had arrived, and Acheron had been, too. Now, more wanderers looking for a home had come here. She hadn't hated Acheron being here. In fact, she'd been happier than she'd ever been before. These two newcomers were friendly, and their wide-eyed wonder at the castle and the caves brought a certain joy to her. Was this what she really wanted?

Hadal finally spoke up at the end of the discussion, and proposed: they start a clan. They take in the lost, and ferry to safety those who don't wish to stay. They make something out of these sanctums, and together, build on the sunken bones left here for them. Their own little family.

Clan Saltspray has existed in the depths ever since. Hadal was the chosen leader, because she'd been the first. She's a kind and fair ruler, though she still gets nervous when it comes to making important decisions—but she's a personable sort. The sort who cares deeply and loves strongly, and believes in the strength of bonds between the outcast and the othered. She doesn't act like a ruler, but mingles among their little group, acting more like a mother than a leader sometimes, though they tend not to mind.

She's come out of her shell a lot, but even so, dragons braving the deeps will still see her sometimes drifting in the deep currents, taking in the dark waters, all on her own—meditative, and calm.
