Born Alabaster Sam, but known simply as Sam around the clan.
Quiet and serious, Sam was the most reluctant of the three to join the pursuit of conquering the coliseum. But, having agreed, Sam has since discovered that he owns a brilliant tactical mind that has gotten them out of more than one sticky situation. Where River and Ellie prefer to rely on strike hard, strike fast, Sam prefers to carefully consider their options and then strike hard and fast, targeting the weakest points of the enemy and bringing them down in the quickest, safest order. River and Ellie have both learned to trust his judgement implicitly, looking to him for direction on the battlefield.
Sam's best friend in the clan is Raphael, a golden skydancer whose personality is almost the direct opposite of Sam's. Where Sam is quiet Raphael is vocal, where Sam is subtle and hidden to the side Raphael is peacocking for attention, and where Sam is cold and ruthless, Raphael is loving and warm. There is tension between them over Sam's activity in the coliseum, and there is an uneasy understanding that Sam is going to one day leave the clan for one where his fighting ability will be needed more.
Sam and Raphael have since moved to the ruins of Castle Starkhaven together. At first, Sam was brooding by himself. Gliese persuaded him to go hunting alongside him, and by the time the two had returned, Raphael had arrived. Sam was overjoyed to see his love again, and has rarely left Raphael's side since.
((The bracelet was a gift from Raphael, "so you'll always have something bright and shiny around even when I'm not available." Sam immediately had it enchanted by Raella to never break, so that he wouldn't have to take it off, even in the coliseum.))
