A bloated, orangy moon drifted carelessly above the wide expanse of the wastes. Not a living thing dared stir within theCharged Barrens. They waited out the storm that thundered across the desert. Sand particles whipped wildly across the ground below. Howling wind split the night, the ferocious fury of mother nature ripping across the land. Within a small sphere, there was silence. The storm gave and bent around the form of two hulking beasts situated beside a nest of crackling eggs. One was a solid thing; an intimidating mass of gleaming golden fur and a black ruff. Gleaming teeth peeked over his cruel jaw. The other was more of a ghost. Red eyes shone from her skull, black tendrils crept from the edges of her being as if she was blurred; half in Sornieth and half in another world. Akuma curled around her nest. It was near time. It was only due to Kenshin’s grace that she’d been able to lay a clutch in the first place. The children were a miracle and a nightmare, a thing that was never meant to be, just as their mother before them. The dark power of Kenshin’s necromancy had solidified Akuma’s grip on Sornieth, but she did not hold the presence of a living thing. The children became restless within their shells. The eggs shuddered, shivered, and cracked. A small monstrosity fell first from one, then the other. As their mother gently cleaned them of their shells, all she could think was beautiful. First hatched, the male was blessed with his father’s gifts. He gravitated to graveyards and old battlefields. His magic was that of death; the ability to reanimate those he chose and feed off the anguish of their life before they crumbled to dust. The female took after her mother. Unlike Akuma, she was living, but her form possessed a certain incorporeal aspect. She took to the work of illusion. Horrid scenes played out before her victims. She reduced them to sobbing wrecks before swallowing their souls whole.
