Their childhoods were smothered in incense and herbs, one father tending to tinctures and remedies while the other taught them how to wield a dagger with the insistence that it was 'just for carving!' Amity's hands are thick with scar tissue, stiff and uneven as he show them how to shape wood into trinkets and tableware and - when he thinks Enmity isn't looking - how to hold it corrently, where to strike the blade for maximum effect.

Enmity knows, but leaves the pretence, a half hidden smile as he crushes herbs with a mortar and pestle, humming old lullabies under his breath. If they show interest, he sweeps a reflective feathered wing around them, teaches them every little plant and all their uses with such fervent excitement he forgets himself.

This child has only known love, surrounded by flock and family, but now the wider world awaits them.
