Sphinx seems to be some sort of offspring of Squishy and Bouncy, a weird shared creation of the two of them. Squishy refers to them as their "snuggle" (we're all assuming that "snuggle" is the proper term for a sentient stuffed hatchling) and Bouncy eagerly tells anybody who will listen what a proud papa he is.

Sphinx is a bit unnerving to the other dragons of Crysthall. It's not that they are particularly cruel or mean or icky - for all intents and purposes, Sphinx is just a plush child - but they are different in a way nobody expected them to be. One, nobody knew that Bouncy and Squishy were a bonded pair. It was a bit of shock for everybody to know that Squishy (the resident non-snuggler) created a life with a plush a quarter of its size. Surely, Sphinx wasn't born naturally?

Ophelia is Sphinx's godmother for whatever nefarious reason. Even Mujaid finds it odd that a woman who repels the sweetest of animals would be allowed around a child but Squishy only beams when the madame interacts with its offspring. Ophelia adores Sphinx and spoils them in the way that every good wine aunt should - with lots of kisses and many, many trips to foreign lands on the mysterious Gracey Manor dime.
