SEREN ; The Starkeeper
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - "Trust in your goals and reach for the stars! Even if you'll miss you'll accidentally summon the Shade." • a b o u t • Although he hails from Aember, Seren never found his home with that clan. Where his clanmates always looked to the sky and the sun, he was infatuated with the stars and the planets that mirrored his flesh. When he left Aember to start his Search, Seren knew exactly what he was looking for - Starsilk. If he could not be Guardian of the stars themselves, he could find the next best thing. He spent years traveling across Sornieth, collecting variants of the rare material. He frequented the Arcanist’s Observatory to see the cosmos up close but struggled to find somewhere to settle and create a lair, instead bouncing from region to region every few weeks or even days. When he stumbled upon a group of dragons in Shadowbinder's domain -- a Fae, a Wildclaw, and two brightly colored Guardian hatchlings -- that changed. Today, Seren hunts and fights for the clan, but also loves spending time in the Nest with the hatchlings, although he has none of his own. The hatchlings adore listening to the stories of his adventures fathering starsilk across Sornieth before joining Cynefin, and he somehow always manages to calm down even the most fussy little ones. A proficient trader, he often accompanies the caravans to the trading post, and always brings back goods for the Hoard and his Clanmates alike. He still visits the Arcanist’s Observatory at leisure, and can often be found watching the stars on the far islands.

“Hey, Mister!”
Seren turned, regarding the bright green hatchling curiously. There was a startled-looking Fae and a defensive Wildclaw behind them, as well as another Guardian hatchling, this one a muted orange, but they remained quiet.
“Yes, young one?”
“I like your stars.”
The Guardian couldn't help but smile at this. “Thank you. I admire your verdancy.”
“Are you lost?” This was the orange hatchling, speaking up from behind the wing of her sister.
“Hm. In a way. I am wandering.”
“We needn't ask this kind wyrm his life story.” The Fae finally spoke, fluttering her intricate wings pointedly.
“Are you looking for a clan?” The green dragon talked on, while the other hatchling had the sense to look sheepish. “Our mother-”
“That’s enough, Briony.” The Wildclaw cut in, stepping forward from the back. “You need not recruit dragons for the Lady.”
"But if he wants-" Briony started, only to be cut off in turn by the Fae.
"If the starkeeper wishes to join the clan he may, but he should seek out Lady Nocturne - of his own volition."
"Where might I find this Lady Nocturne?" Seren asked, turning his attention from the hatchlings to the Fae.
"Our clan's lair is carved into the base of Dusk Sanctum." The Wildclaw said with a flick of her tail. “Granted that you have no ill intent, the Lady would be willing to speak with you.”
“I will sleep on it.” Seren decided, turning away without another word.

Two weeks later, Seren approached the mouth of the lair. Carved into the side of Dusk Sanctum, near the base, there was a ledge that allowed for easy flight comings and goings. The entrance was as wide as it was tall, the Guardian easily making his way inside despite his size, even managing to avoid knocking any of the candles lit and melted along the rocky walls.
“Starkeeper.”
Seren startled at the voice, turning quickly to see the marigold Wildclaw slinking out of her Watch, a crevice hidden in the dark wall of the cave.
“Hello, Warden."
"Please, you may call me Shania. I assume you wish to talk to the Lady?"
Seren nodded, and Shania wordlessly led the way further into the lair. The caves were massive, but empty, dimly lit by candles casting dancing shadows along the craggy walls. The air inside was sweetened by herbs Seren didn’t recognize, creating a calming atmosphere throughout the winding caverns.
They traveled until Seren was lost -- how far underground were they? -- until, finally, they stepped out into a large circular room. This was where the clan kept their Hoard, carefully sectioned out into wide indents carved into the walls, clear claw marks still decorating the edges. In the center was a nest big enough for several full-grown Guardians, constructed of feathers, coins, and soft greenery. Shania stoped in the arched entranceway, beckoning Seren to approach.
“Starkeeper.” A deep red Guardian rose from the nest, stretching her wings. “I’ve been awaiting your visit.”
“My name is Seren.” He said, dipping his head respectfully. “I come bearing gifts and questions.”
Lady Nocturne was smaller than he, her scales decorated with bird bone and feather. She was none to be disrespected, though, her dark purple eyes nearly daring him to try.
“A gift?” The Lady’s eyes grew curious, slinking out of the nest to stand in front of Seren.
“I have traveled Sornieth for a decade, collecting anything akin to the stars. They have become my charge, over time, and a token trinket of mine.”
He lifted one great wing, and presented a starsilk earring from beneath, offering it to Nocture on one claw. She took it carefully, turning it in the candlelight and watching the way it reflected back a galactic spectrum of colors.
“And your questions?” She asked, turning her attention from the small star to the dragon in front of her.
“I wish to join your clan,” Seren said simply. “I am competent at hunting and fighting, but tire of doing it -- surviving -- on my own. I hope to perhaps find a family here, but I do not know if it is possible.”
“Our clan is small as of yet, but close-knit. We would be more than willing to accept you among our ranks. The only goal here is to protect each other -- I do not exalt any of my followers to the Shadowbinder, but you will be removed from the clan if deemed necessary. There is no trial nor test, and as long as you provide for your clanmates as they do to you, you will have a place here.”
“I would be honored to follow you, Lady Nocturne,” Seren said, dipping his head again.
“Welcome to Cynefin, Seren.” She said, leaning forward and firmly fastening the starsilk earring around one of his great horns. “Welcome home.”
