Biography

There is always a price to pay for crime, and Vadim is a dragon fond of getting paid. For years now, he has roamed the Tangled Wood, keen eyes always peeled for new bounties, and gradually, his reputation has started to grow into something grand. If someone wants another dragon found, Vadim is the dragon to call.

Once, though, he wasn't so formidable. A young Pearlcatcher anxious to leave the cruel heat of Rotrock Rim behind, he initially found himself hunting petty crooks just to stay afloat, drifting between clans and whittling away at his funds between jobs. The bounties were nothing thrilling, and the crimes barely harmful, but he had to do something, and Vadim was very good at very few things. He could negotiate well, hunt even better, and had a knack for getting the truth out of folks who didn't want to give it. These three talents were perfect for tracking criminals across the land, and combined with his gruff nature and indifference to justice in the face of a price tag, useless for just about anything else.

So he worked hard, then worked even harder. It took years to bolster his reputation into anything worth boasting about, and even then, it was an unsteady position. He would never lose his job, since there was always someone to hunt down and turn in, but there were always up-and-coming bounty hunters with beginner's luck on their sides, and withered old dragons who had been making a profit in the business since before Vadim was born. Competition was fierce at all times, and although he could be the hero of the day from time to time, the next morning, someone else could just as easily stand in his place. He had to be the very best in order to keep his services in demand.

But that is impossible for extended periods of time. He fell in and out of favor, tangled up in the local hunting politics, and it wore on him. He didn't care how many dragons were after his skills so long as at least one was ready to pay him. Half up front, half on delivery preferred. And when that number started to dwindle, he cut his losses and moved into the Tangled Wood to try his luck there.

It was at the edges of the Obscured Crescent that he established himself, not by setting up a base of sorts, but by saving three dragons under attack by a deranged Ice Imperial. They were from Clan Dark-Blood, and promised not to let his valor go unrewarded. They offered him shelter and a meal, and before long, he was trading his services for these things and a little treasure on the side.

Now, Vadim alternates between bounty hunter and clan guard, keeping largely to himself. He finds it to be wonderfully stable income without any new skills or outrageous demands. As an added bonus, the clan leaves him well enough alone, put off by his callous demeanor, and no one turns up at his nest in the middle of the night to beg his favor. He exists and hunts on his own terms, and that's just fine.
