clan spikenard is best known for its exports! delivered far and wide across sornieth, the substances spikenard exports are largely (though not exclusively) plant-based.

dragons who transform raw materials into finished products are referred to as distillers; this term suggests the fermentation of alcohol, or the use of alchemical processes, but most of clan spikenard's output is manufactured with straightforward physical or magical methods.

distiller is a general job title used to indicate skilled artisanship, particularly to the outside world; more specific designations are primarily used only within the clan, for clarity's sake -- for instance, to indicate the canton, especially for farmers, or to indicate the wing under which a dragon produces, and for which products it is responsible.

spikenard is best known for its production of oils. however, the clan's organization is not primarily based around what is produced, but rather around what the intended use and market for the product is.

as such, clan spikenard's production can be broadly classified into two markets: luxury and essential. even though the raw materials being used might be near-identical, the complicated processes and additional equipment required to refine luxury goods means that, for the most part, they are produced in entirely separate facilities and by different workers.

essential goods are consumed by the clan itself, and generally only sold to nearby water clans and local beastclans, as well as to travelers passing through the area. occasionally, they are sold further afield, but long-distance deliveries nigh-exclusively occur alongside luxury goods (free shipping for all orders over 100kT!).

only a few wings produce items for both markets concurrently. these wings are largely responsible for factors of production -- the presses in charge of producing all oil, for cooking as well as for perfumes -- or they are simply too small to be further divided -- glassmakers, in charge of artistic pieces as well as the bottles used to sell most luxury goods.

note: luxury and essential are not necessarily reflective of value; essential products produced by clan spikenard are of the same caliber as luxury goods, and held to the same standards of excellence. essential merely indicates that demand (and therefore, price) remain relatively steady and inelastic, no matter how the market for spikenard's other goods fluctuates.

----small light spells and charms: unicorn dust, glowing pocket baubles

----beastclan-assisted: fine harpy-made engraved work (largely pottery & bone jewelry), feathers, some harpy musical compositions for draconic voices (see: knowledge, archiving), longneck botany (see: knowledge, archives), longneck ropework and knot-work/braiding, (some) centaur metalwork & textiles.
----anti-shade spells: see 'services'. cannot be produced in bulk; individually crafted. generally require a visit and significant hands-on ritual work before they can be implemented.

ADMINISTRATION


management and hospitality: in charge of administration, both in-house and for guests.

----housing: ensures that all dragons and sentient beings who require lodgings have access to them, while also ensuring separation and sanctity of private spaces and maintaining the clan's secrets.
----administrator: keeps track of tasks that need doing and delegates to get them done; organizes duty rosters for everything but the warriors and guards. (arael - expand on this)
----product management: ensures that goods for sale are properly preserved, packaged, and ready for sale; quality control. occasionally still does hands-on work. (xylem)
----accountant/clerk/trader: organizes importation, exportation, and trade. keeps and balances the books. manages the bigger picture for money (profit v. revenue, manages loans and payments). works to maximize profit. possibly the hardest job in the clan. (zahab - this dragon ! )
----hospitality: presents a friendly face to guests, visitors, and potential trading partners. works closely with housing and diplomacy (see gov't).

CLAN MAINTENANCE


things like weeding, pathway-maintenance, as well as tunneling (sia) & other housing patch-work, and to a certain extent things like blacksmithing.

also includes harveting and processing of raw materials.

presses, run by undying, are used to create cider (apple and pear), olive oil, and grape juice and wine.

FARMING


most of the plants produced by spikenard are grown in the dry, hardy areas of light territory. while spikenard is located close to two major sources of water -- the sea of a thousand currents as well as many of the rivers which contribute to the massive series of waterfalls that tumble over the cliffs between the ruins and the sea -- it is not possible to irrigate all of spikenard's farmland.

many of the plants grown and insects cultivated for internal use could perhaps be classified as famine foods, especially by dragons from more verdant areas. this is not to say that only hardy desert plants can survive in spikenard; there are may greenhouses, and complex systems of irrigation cling alongside rivers.

much of the territory is rich in groundwater, even without access to irrigation. but the heat and scorching sun in light territory mean that none but the hardiest imports survive without special attention. plants with small, pale leaves and sticky, fragrant sap flourish.

the primary cultivated plants grown by spikenard are olives. they are sold pickled in small quantities, but their primary use is to create oil, which is sold for a multitude of purposes: all purpose usage, cooking, seasoning (both pure, and seasoned with herbs), and as the base for any number of perfumed oils, including the spikenard from which the clan takes its name.

though much of the clan consists of thousands of unevenly distributed individual raised beds and small patches of flowers, interspersed with olive trees, berry bushes, and the occasional grapevine trellis, there are also areas of more traditional field-and-row agricultural cultivation (fields of wheat/grains, rows of grapevine, olive trees and other shrubby fruit trees, especially apples and pears), especially along the river's banks, especially upstream from the waterfalls, as well as terracing at the clffsides.

RELIGION


syncretism rules the day in clan spikenard. nominally -- and fervently -- devoted to the lightweaver, the clan is nonetheless made up of as many transplants as it is natural-born light dragons.

while everyone has good reason to honor the lightweaver -- either sincere religious fervor, or merely the sort of adherence to shared values that forges community ties, with or without feeling behind it -- not everyone grew up under her shining wing.

traditions are a hodgepodge of confused attempts at traditional light practice, outward light-devotion chased with private traditional worship of a birth deity, and traditional worship of a different deity, with nothing but a few details and names changed in order to file things off into a neat fit.
