Two decades later, his child was the first to meet him and his men. Always white and blue, the idol of the city now wears gold: the ring is thin and modest, but it shines nonetheless on his pale finger when he holds out the plate. Perfect prince, a compassionate man, celebrating the return of tired old soldiers, bread and salt for their leader - and only Ardreth is close enough to see those cold, cold eyes.
- Welcome home, father.


She kisses him on his cheek, smiling. "Isn't that a perfect birthday gift", she laughs. "You will be an uncle", she whispers. When she holds his hand, the cold metal of her golden ring burns him.


Two decades later, Ardreth is finally back.
Once feared, he is now almost forgotten. A fiend that he was, replaced with pale flame. Oh if they only knew, what taint and rot is under their idol's skin, that he drowns in red in his dreams, that his blood boils under the sun! A fiend was replaced by another fiend, it seems. What will it take for this one to show whose child he is?


She is perfect in her wedding dress. White, pink and yellow, she looks like a pastel painting, with her fiery hair in a simple braid, lips red under the veil. "Red would be so good on you", he said, only a few minutes before she was at the altar. She smiled nervously, but picked up the lipstick anyway. One hell of a finishing touch it was.


- You picked a man for yourself after all? I knew you were just a c-
He laughs as he wipes the blood off, as his son drags his husband away. No, his offspring would never do such a thing. If only his son was a true man, like his father, if only he didn't hide behind his white halos... But Ardreth always knew he can never get what he wants.
He visits the graves next day, and brings no flowers. Flowers aren't his thing, and if her ghost still lingers, a few roses as an apology won't cut it. But he spits on the grave next to her when he feels that phantom pain crawling up his shoulder and neck like a touch that was once welcomed.

Looking at her was always like looking in the mirror. The image distorted slightly over the years, as he wasn't slender and ethereal anymore, but she remained just that. Delicate beauty with a heart of fire, no wonder she won in the end. And no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't bring himself to hate her for this. After all, he never told her anything when he introduced them to each other.
What could he say? He was afraid, just as Kilian was.

Kilian was never one to write letters, and now his fingers are stained with ink every other day. "Mother is worried sick", he told Ardreth, holding both of his hands, a kiss and a smile was all it took. It's so easy to trust when you're in love.
