the coming of age ceremonies for wind dragons are long and arduous, and not every hatchling survives them. in the first summer that their wings can carry their weight, hatchlings and their parents fly from the busy cloudsong to the grassy terrace of the zephyr steppes. parents give their children a swift and loving farewell, and return to their homes without a backwards glance--their children are grown now, this was a rite each of them went through in their youths, and they try not to dwell on the possibility of never seeing their hatchlings again and instead look forward to meeting them as adults.

most dragons make it through the trials of the zephyr steppes--especially those who already traveled a long distance to get there--and move on with eager eyes to the reedcleft ascent in the north. that is where sidh waits.

without the presence of their adults, the hatchlings are guarded by watchers, a sort of counselor and surrogate that lives there during the season of flight. sidh has spent many years in the reedcleft ascent, and where the zephyr steppe watchers are patient, silly, and encouraging, sidh is the sharp snap of a bamboo sword. she is the dizzying cliff that stretches into the sky, the strong wind that pushes you to the edge, and the hungry rapids roiling down below.

and she loves flight more than anything. second to that she loves the way a dragons eyes light up when they finish their second trial. since sidh took her post at the ascent, fewer and fewer dragons have failed the second trial and fewer who have been lost to the third--she is more willing to hold young dragons back for another season than either flunk them or pass them unearned.

sidh is also a diligent record keeper, once in charge of the archives cataloguing every dragon who had failed the triplicate trials and was barred entry into the cloudtop. working the cloudtop archival security was a job she found depressing, and that perceived failure of the system is what drove her to instead become a watcher, to prevent that list from getting any longer.
