Wise and steadfast mother


Nightscales is a dragon who has always been guided by her gut and intuition. She rarely shows strong emotion, instead radiating an unshakable calm and masterful self-control. She speaks very little of her past to those she does not know, but only because they do not ask.

When she first became acquainted with Ironscales, the other dragons of the clan would remark to each other on just how much she had seemed to tame his wild nature. Most did not notice the impact that Ironscales had on her in return. While it was true that she was calm and collected on the surface, on the inside, she was full to near bursting with passion. There were so many things that burned inside her - the longing to know the love of a family, to know how the world looked through the eyes of others, to know what it would be like to help someone turn a mere dream into something tangible.

Ironscales gave all those things to her and more. He told her everything about the world he experienced on his adventures, and the influence they had on his life. He, as well as the rest of the clan, showed her what it meant to be a family and to find strength in each other. She and Ironscales had hatchlings together, and she was able to experience the world through the eyes of a hatchling again. Though she and Ironscales engaged with different mates after that nest, and though most of her children left the clan in pursuit of their own journeys, Ironscales never ignored her or their eldest who had stayed behind.

Nightscales felt the happiest when she was able to "be the family hero." When she helped her daughter Smokewing finally get her toy boat to float, or when Ironscales would whisper to her that he'd never had a more wonderful night, or when she and Ironscales would "vanquish" the nightmare monsters in little Smokewing's room so she could go back to sleep. All the little things that added up to the world being a more amazing place, with her having played a part of it.

But the strength of her passions and her need to be the stability of those she loved could backfire. She was calm, yes, but not conceited. There would be moments, especially when things were going wrong, where her fears and stresses would drown her. Ironscales, the impulsive adventure-seeker, would ironically become her strength during the times she no longer had control. He would comfort her in a way that no other dragon could, staying beside her until she was herself again.

The bonds she has with her family are still her greatest strength. The previous suitors having eventually come and gone, her bond with Ironscales has truly lasted the test of time, and it is with him that she still remains. Her daughter Smokewing still lives in the same clan, helping her father build and sell kites, even after the move across Sornieth. These two steadfast dragons, her mate and her daughter, remind her of all the love that she has given, and all the love that she has received.
