written by @ShadowSky Antares is descended from a clan of star spirits that prize their uniqueness. They believed that they were superior, that they should not worship the deities or anything other than themselves. Antares despised everyone and how ... perfect they were. He was expected to live up to their standards, to be just as perfect and superior as anyone else. But he didn't want to. He wanted to be free. And he was the only child of the royals, which meant that he was paraded around, that he was constantly holed up in the palace and made to study things like the brilliance of the clan. And he hated it. Even when he was a hatchling, he wanted to escape. As he grew, that desire intensified. And then everything changed. During one of the trips from their sanctum in the middle of nowhere in the Starfall Isles to "observe their subjects", Antares snuck off for a little bit and met an Imperial. She was the opposite of everything the clan stood for; tough, resourceful, and sassy. During their stay, Antares regularly snuck over to Miasma and she taught him how to fight, how to follow a trail, how to survive in the wild. She'd been cast out of her own clan after she was accused of killing a dragon in her clan, and cursed to boot with an ability to hear malevolent spirits. And this is how Antares wanted to live. Over the week or so, he fell in love with the reckless Imperial. And they hatched a plan. On the last day, Antares escaped with Miasma. He'd learned a lot that week, and they hid their trail well enough that nobody knew how to follow them. They knew one place to travel; the Tangled Wood. His clan had despised the Tangled Wood, as it was so ... well, tangled, dark. The journey was not easy; as a royal, Antares still had no idea how to survive. It got even worse once they crossed into the Scarred Wasteland; even Miasma was having a hard time dodging everything in their way. They traveled for a long time. Probably because half the time they were traveling in circles. Antares turned out to be cool and calculating under pressure, and Miasma was utterly unpredictable and wild. Together, they stumbled into the Shadowlands. After so long living in the bright Starfall Isles with equally bright and starry clanmates, the darkness was a relief. Miasma and Antares agreed they would settle down here; but where? They found the Foxfire Bramble, and that is where they got utterly lost. The clan was still very small at that time, so Shadow was patrolling herself that day, having purposefully lost the rest since she liked being independent, clan leader or not. She brought them in, and Antares and Miasma fit right in. Living so long on the go, Antares had lost whatever superiority complex had rubbed into him. Antares turned out to be a skillful fighter, combining his strength and speed with cunning; he and Miasma often worked together, an unbeatable team. Even though all the plans Antares made and told Miasma five hundred times were forgotten by Miasma, they still worked very well together. Soon, Antares and Miasma became mates. As Shadow was very stubborn and uncooperative, the clan agreed that the clan couldn't just have one leader. As Antares was the polar opposite of Shadow -- logical and thoughtful, they decided that Antares should be joint clan leader. What they forgot was that Antares is just as stubborn as Shadow. Antares didn't like how Shadow jumped straight to the part where she got to fight and forgot all the plans. Shadow didn't like how Antares planned things, thought about it, then planned some more, ended up not doing anything at all. Then thought about that decision a lot. They do try to get along, and sometimes they'll agree on a very bad idea and with their stubborn attitudes through the roof, nobody can stop them or would ever dream of trying. Their fights are still legendary, however. Neither of the leaders talk a lot, since Shadow literally pretends to be mute. |
