❀ Species Profile & Conservation Status ❀

Least Concern The Southern Red Bishop is a small passerine bird belonging to the weaver family. It is common in wetlands and grassland in Africa south of the Equator. It occurs from South Africa north to Angola, southern and eastern parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo, northern Zambia southern Uganda north-east Nigeria and south-west Kenya. It is largely absent from the Namib Desert and Kalahari. In the breeding season it is found near water among grass, reeds, sedges or crops such as sugar cane. The Red Bishop is a fairly gregarious bird, nesting in colonies and foraging in flocks. It feeds on seeds and some insects. It often roosts in mixed flocks with other members of the weaver family. Outside the breeding season it will venture into drier grassland and savanna habitats. It is not considered at risk of extinction.

Fun Fact: At the start of the breeding season, the males build several nests to attract females. They perform a display flight with their feathers fluffed up. They are polygynous and mate with several females. The nest is most commonly built among reeds and is made of grasses and other plant materials woven together.

❀ Biography ❀
Orix came to Owl Wood somewhat late in life, in January, 2024. He doesn't speak much about his life before his arrival here, other than to say that most of his family have gone to serve various deities. Quiet at first, it didn't take him long to begin to make connections with the dragons in our clan, and before long he was known as a somewhat gregarious sort. A weaver by training, Orix and Tyra bonded over their love of textiles, and others living in the savanna soon joined them as they crafted and told stories by the fireside. Orix has made himself quite at home here, and intends to stay for the time being.
