The purple Tundra glanced behind her, at the footprints in the snow. Four toes, a central pawpad, and a light streak behind them from her feathers. Still four toes on each. Good. The dragon was well-suited, perhaps even hatched for, the cold, but this was too much, too soon. A blizzard ripped through the Boreal Woods, and the Tundras were still in their summer coats. She swore she could feel her wing membranes freezing. Despite the unusual cold far too early in the season, Purble seemed to be the only one quite so affected. But she never did feel as if she fit in. Hatched from an egg found after the scouts of her clan defeated some beings of Shade, Purble was hatched with deep blue eyes that always stood out among the significantly more pale eyes of her clan. She always broke the mold, putting less thought into her own name than other dragons of unknown lineage did, deciding within seconds as opposed to spending months researching the right fit, adding joking flourishes to attacks to keep herself awake during training despite the odd looks she received, and of course, her dislike of the cold. It was to no one's surprise when it came time for the dragons of age who had completed their training to leave and start their own clans in the south that Purble marched northward. She didn't know why, she just knew that it felt right. Days passed, with none of the snowfields feeling like home. Massive, untouched mountains would provide a perfect territory for tunneling, but Purble passed them by, waiting for something right. One day, the dragon, unknown to her, reached the end of the icefields. Sand under her paws, she looked out in awe over the ocean as the ice plains she knew grew more and more fragmented as chunks floated out farther into the sea. She wasn't quite there yet, but she was getting closer. |
