Biography

Subspecies: Gliff
Created by: ShadowSnatcher (ID:448434)

Overview

There have been many rumors circulating in regards of this Subspecies origin. Some believe they were created from a group of unsuspecting Faes that had encountered the unruly Shade. While others believe it was the Icewarden attempting to create the ultimate spies for him to utilize. Regardless of these theories the first reported Gliff was made in the Fortress of Ends. For many years they were considered a myth due to their unnatural ability to meld into the shadows. Their status change from myth to actual was due to an unsightly event. Hundreds of them had poured out of the fortress one blustering evening. The reason for their sudden departure has remained unknown. What we do know is that they have since spread themselves across Sornieth, particularly the domains of Shadow, Earth and Nature.

Clan life

While this Subspecies no longer conceals their existence from dragon-kind, Gliff's do not typically integrate with other non Gliff clans. Instead they mainly choose to remain in select groups of their own kind. These groups are typically composed of family members and a few unrelated Gliff's who have joined their mates clan. As for these Gliff composed clans they are typically located on the outskirts of their respective domain. While they do welcome the occasional visitor into their clan it is uncommon for a different species to permanently join their group.

On the rare occasion a select few will choose to join clans of mixed species. This is not a common occurrence partly due to the Gliff's social preferences but also due to another reason. When they had simply been known as myths, witnessing one was attributed to bad luck or misfortune. Although when the Gliff's made their departure from The Fortress of Ends. What was once a local mindset had soon spread like wildfire across the domains. As many associated their departure with a sign of bad things to come. Due to this stereotype many superstitious clans will not allow a Gliff to visit, let alone join their clan.

Of the few Gliff's that do integrate with a clan, they typically choose to live on said clans border. Keeping to themselves mainly and befriending potentially 1-2 clan members. These clan mates typically display a calmer demeanor. A perfect candidate for the considerably shy Gliff.

Characteristics

The average Gliff typically sports darker metallic scales, adorned with a lighter pattern. This pattern design is typically in the shape of a skeleton upon their scales or a light smirchy design. Along with these unusual patterns very rarely there is a Gliff born with rather eerie looking eyes. Their eye's unsettling nature can be attributed to the fact that their sclera is colored completely black. While it is uncertain as to why, those with this unusual set of eyes have been observed to possess a more powerful melding ability than their kin.

This specific ability that this Subspecies' possesses is called Melding. Melding is their unique ability to merge into an objects shadow. Granted this ability has limitations, for example a Gliff cannot merge into a shadow that is smaller than their body. Along with this rule there is a time limit. Now this time limit varies Gliff to Gliff. Although as mentioned earlier Gliff's with dark sclera are able to linger in shadows longer.

Gliff's also exhibit strange living habits along side their unique appearance. An abundance of plants can typically be found overflowing a Gliff's quarters. Many believe this is to make up for their lack of friends. Amongst this abundance of leafy friends many perches can also be found in their residence. This is due to their unusual preference of hanging upside down while they sleep.

Species Behavior

Gliffs will mainly be seen within pairs. Majority will only choose one partner in its lifetime. If their partner is to unfortunately meet an early end many will choose not to take on another. Partners are typically chosen in adolescence by compatibility. For example, age, similar flight speed, ideals, etc.... are all variables considered when claiming a partner.

When it comes to raising hatchlings they do not want any outside interference in the rearing of their young. To ensure there is no such chance of this, pairings will leave their clan/group temporarily. They will claim a location they consider ideal and raise their young to adolescence. Upon reaching this stage both parents and young will return to the clan. Parents will take the time to introduce them to their clan members then allow their young to settle where they please within it or outside of it.

Battle

While this subspecies does not usually partake in battle, instead choosing to lead a peaceful life. On the off chance they do enter battle they will typically employ their melding ability to escape. If by chance there is no shadows for them to utilize an escape. Gliff's will tend to search for a hole in the ground/wall to hide until their attacker either flees or gives up their assault.

Occasionally Gliff's will join a team in battle. While they do not partake in direct battle many are considered the teams scout. Using their melding ability they will enter the shadows and gather information on their enemies. Listening in for information that may ultimately lead to their enemies apprehension.
